U.S. VeteranLeslie “Pete” Kallies, age 79, passed away on June 21, 2012. Visitation will be held at Tres Hewell Mortuary on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Seguin with Rev. Paul Smith and Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Interment, with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion H. U. Wood Post #245 and fraternal honors under the auspices of Hermann Sons Lodge #37 in Seguin, will follow in the Belmont Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Belmont Community Center. Pete was born on July 19, 1932 to Arnold and Frances Jahns Kallies in Gonzales County. He graduated from Dowdy High School in the Darst Creek Oil Field. He proudly served his country by serving in the United States Air Force as an air policeman, stationed primarily in England. In 1953 he married his High School Sweetheart, Dorothy L. “Dottie” Vogel. In August of 1964 Pete went to work for the Seguin Police Department under Captain Leroy Schneider. He worked as a patrolman and then as a criminal investigator along with Robert Zoboroski and Joe Carrillo until 1970. He left to lease and manage an Enco Service Station on West Court Street. In 1972 Pete ran and was nominated as Sheriff in the 1972 April Primary. In August he was appointed by Judge Pat Baker and the Commissioner’s Court to fill the unexpired term of Sheriff Phil Medlin who resigned due to health concerns. In November of 1972, he was elected to his first 4 year term as Sheriff of Guadalupe County. He was elected and served two more terms. In 1985, he retired from the Sheriff’s Department and went to work for the Grand Lodge of Sons of Hermann-The State of Texas in San Antonio. After holding several positions with the Hermann Sons Lodge, he retired in 2005, and spent his time farming, ranching, hunting and fishing on the Kallies family farm in eastern Guadalupe County. Pete’s memberships included Hermann Sons Lodge #37 in Seguin, American Legion H. U. Wood Post 245 in Seguin, Sheriff’s Association of Texas and the Guadalupe Valley Sheriff’s Association and the Farm Bureau. He is preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents, Frank and Emilie Knodel Jahns and August and Mary Komoll Kallies. Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Kallies; daughter, Mona Ulbricht and husband Walter; sons, Basil Kallies and wife Rebecca, and Jeffery Kallies; grandchildren, Melanie Donaho, Megan Granzin and husband Travis and Cameron Kallies; great-grandchildren, Ashley Lane, Addison Donaho and Hayden Granzin; sister, Evelyn Neumann; step-mother, Clara Kallies; sister-in-law, Alma Vogel; numerous close nieces, nephews and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Cameron Kallies, Travis Granzin, Kenneth Neumann, Danny Neumann, Steven Neumann, Gregg Koehler, Chuck Dixon and Ronnie Glenewinkel; Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Jones, Calvin Lange, Mark Zoboroski, Lonnie Zoboroski, Allen Wiedner, Otto Schramm, Udo Schmoekel, Charlie Koehler, Melvin Harborth and all area law enforcement past and present. Memorial contributions may be made to Belmont United Methodist Church, Belmont Community Center, or Belmont Cemetery Association, c/o Belmont UMC, P. O. Box 906, Belmont, Texas 78604, or to a charity of one’s choice.
