Arthur David (A.D.) Schaefer age 94 of Seguin, passed away on October 15, 2012. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5:30 to 7p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Lee Zillmann officiating. Interment with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion H. U. Wood Post 245 will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. A.D. was born on March 14, 1918 to Arthur Julius and Emma Knetsch Schaefer in Seguin, Texas. A.D. was baptized on October 1, 1933 and confirmed on March 25, 1934, by Pastor Theodore Janssen at Emanuel's Lutheran Church, Seguin. He attended Tiemann School in Guadalupe County. A.D. was married to Thelma Behrens on December 22, 1942 at Redeemer Evangelical Church of Zuehl by Pastor E.H. Schwengel. Having enlisted in January 1942, he served the U.S. Army in WWII as a Rifle Marksman in the 817th Bombardment Squadron 483rd Bombardment group, largely in France and Italy. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 as a decorated veteran with an EAME Campaign Medal with 7 Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal and was a lifetime member of the American Legion H.U. Wood Post 245 in Seguin. A.D. worked for the Guadalupe County Clerk's office for 38 years as deputy county clerk and county clerk retiring in July 1993. A.D. and his wife, Thelma lived with her mother, Leona Magel Behrens for many years on the family farm near Zuehl. His passions included cooking, gardening and his pets. He had a small orchard of peach trees as well as many beautiful flowers surrounding their home. He loved to share his recipes with everyone. All the people who touched his life enjoyed something made by his hands. He would bring cookies or cakes to the staffs of doctors that he went to see and even to the rehabilitation hospitals that helped him as he aged. He canned pickles and made the best okra gumbo. He treated his dogs and his bird like royalty. He would cook chicken every night to feed to his terriers. They loved to sit in his lap on his back porch and they had the warmest dog houses in town. Later in life he took up the passion of oil painting. He especially enjoyed painting landscapes, many of them filled with Texas bluebonnets. His paintings were shown throughout the city at art shows and exhibits. Although they never had children of their own, they were very close to their nieces and great nieces and nephews. A.D. and Thelma enjoyed many years of dancing on the weekends. A.D. and Thelma taught two of their great nieces to dance by taking them to weddings with them and dancing with them. His dear wife, Thelma, preceded him in death on September 13, 1993, after celebrating 50 years of marriage in 1992. A.D. is survived by his sisters, Elaine S. Dotson and Lillie Dotson of Seguin, while preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Louis and his sister, Martha Backhaus. A.D. is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
