Obituary

Alfred John (Toppie) Riedel, Jr., age 85, the youngest son of pioneer Houstonians Louise and A. J. Riedel,Sr., born November 26, 1925 went home to the Lord on May 28, 2011. A. J. was born and raised in the Spring Branch area of Houston. A. J. attended Spring Branch Elementary and the old Addicks High School. A.J. eloped with Ruth Ramsey in 1947 and the two spent fifty one years together until Ruth's passing in 1998. In 1948 A. J. went to work for the Howard Smith Screen Company, where he remained until 1981. He then joined the Howard Smith Company until his retirement. A. J. and Howard Smith have remained friends thru the years and the family would like to say thank you to Mr. Smith, for the act of kindness many years ago. A. J., at 27 years of age was stricken with Polio in 1952 and confined to a wheel chair for the remainder of his life. Everyone who knew A. J. as a friend or as an acquaintance will tell you the words can't or handicapped were not in A. J.'s vocabulary. A. J. lived a very active life enjoying a variety of activities, being active with his family, fishing, hunting and traveling across the United States. A. J. is preceded in death by his wife Ruth Catherine Riedel, his parents, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include his daughter, Sally Liberty and husband Jim of Seguin, Texas; son, Larry Riedel and wife Janice of Bakersfield California; grandchildren, Jamie Riedel Jetton and husband Jeff and John Riedel; several nieces and nephews. A. J. will be missed by his dear friends Emma Penrose of Spring, Texas and Linda Riedel of Terrell, Texas. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7p.m. Another visitation will be held on Wednesday June 1, 2001 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Houston. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Houston with Rev. Jim Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Texas Polio Survivors Association, 800 Wilcrest Ste. 201, Houston , Texas, 77042.
