Adele Jackson Shanafelt, age 93, went home to be with her Lord, Monday, January 25, 2016.
She was born, August 17, 1922, in Dayton, Ohio, to Alva Harlan Jackson and Edythe Shafer Jackson. Adele's father bought land and moved his family to Catarina, Texas, after he took an excursion train to the Winter Garden in the Rio Grande Valley. She attended schools in Catarina and Asherton and graduated from Asherton High School. Later they moved to Kingsville, Texas, where she met Ralph Shanafelt, who was working at the Naval Air Station. They married October 24, 1942, and before his death in 2013, they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.
Adele and Ralph came to Seguin in 1947 when Ralph founded what is now known as Shanafelt Auto Company, which is still in operation. They became very active members of First Baptist Church. She held various teaching positions, was a faithful choir member, and member of church building committees. She was also a member of the Zonta Club of Seguin.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, visiting many foreign countries. But the most important thing in her life was the pride she took in her five children and the nurturing of them and their extended families. They will always remember "Grandmother" as a positive and loving influence in their lives.
Adele was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and granddaughter, Catherine Jean Shanafelt. She is survived by her children: Kathleen (Robert) Martin of Edna, TX; Jack (Penny) Shanafelt; Fred Shanafelt (Joanne), Marianne (Howard) Hudiburg; and Stacy (Bobby Greg) Johnson, all of Seguin: 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation will begin on Friday, January 29, 2016 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Andrew Shanafelt, R. J. Shanafelt, Robert Clay Martin, Samuel Shanafelt, Billy Knott, Session Howell, Nathan Beabout, Ryan Drake, and Matt Pardue. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 1314 East Cedar Street, Seguin Texas, 78155.
