Obituary

Ann Sportsman, 102, went to her heavenly rest on March 19, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. Ann was born on November 11, 1909 in Hollene, New Mexico to Charlie and Emma Doyle shortly after the family had journeyed in a covered wagon from Texas to New Mexico. Ann spent much of her young life in San Angelo, Texas with her parents and seven siblings. She was introduced to her future husband, Beverly (B.B.) Sportsman by mutual friend Clyde Biggs in San Angelo. Ann married B.B. Sportsman in 1941 and moved to South Texas. The couple raised two children, Kay and Charles, and owned Sportsman's Man Shop in Corpus Christi, where she resided until moving to Seguin in 1980. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Corpus Christi and the First Methodist Church in Seguin. Ann was a member of the Paulist Sunday School class and helped make many blankets for the Circle of Angels. She was a 30-year cancer survivor and volunteered through Reach to Recovery to help other women who were facing breast cancer. Ann worked at Sally's Hallmark shop in Seguin from 1989-2004, and many customers will remember her for assisting them to find the perfect card or gift. She retired at the young age of 94. In 2004, she moved to Seguin Assisted Living and spent eight happy years there in the loving care of Karen and Lindsey Taylor and the wonderful staff. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Emma Doyle, seven brothers and sisters, and her husband Beverly B. Sportsman. She is survived by her daughter Kay Scull and husband Elam of Seguin, and son Charles Sportsman and wife Adrienne of Portland, Texas. She is also survived by six loving grandchildren, Will Scull and wife Renee, Amy Skaggs and husband Jack, Megan Park and husband Chris, Kristin Scull, Nathan Sportsman, and Courtney Durbin, and by seven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emma Scull, Samuel, Jane Ann, and Charlotte Skaggs, Elec Park, and Piper Durbin. Ann was a devout Christian whose life was an expression of her belief and good deeds. She was an inspiration to her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial visitation and reception will be held Monday, April 2, 2012 from 5:30-7:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, Hierholzer Hall in Seguin. Later, private graveside services will be held in Corpus Christi, Texas. Memorial tributes may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin Street, Seguin, Texas 78155.
