Obituary

Bernice Elley Fleming passed away at her residence in Falls City, Texas on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the age of 92.Bernice was born in Seguin on March 17, 1926 to Robert L. and Elisa (Fischer) Elley. Sadly, she lost her father at the age of 3, from an industrial accident. Bernice was baptized and confirmed at Austin Street Methodist Church in Seguin. She grew up in McQueeney, Texas and attended McQueeney School from first grade through her sophomore year. Bernice then attended Seguin High School her junior and senior years and graduated in 1943. Attending Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) from 1943 through 1944, she transferred to the University of Texas, 1946-1949. Bernice received a B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1949. She was always very proud of that accomplishment. Bernice taught in elementary school for 11 years, 7 years in the Seguin ISD, at Juan Seguin, Mary B. Erskine and Weinert Elementary schools. She spent most of her life in Seguin, Texas. On June 1, 1957, Bernice married the love of her life, Guadalupe County Judge, Leonard "Dick" Fleming and retired from teaching. Their daughter, Patsy Fleming Bolf, was born in 1959. After Leonard retired from politics, he continued with his trucking business. Bernice was his dispatcher, bookkeeper and right hand in the business until he retired in 1990. They remained on the family farm on Capote Road and raised cattle. Bernice willingly accepted the responsibility for the care of Leonard's brother, Bill, who was born with Down's syndrome, until his death at age 60. After suffering multiple strokes, Leonard required constant care for nearly two years. Bernice was a loving caregiver to him until his death in 2001. They were married for 44 years. Bernice loved music and enjoyed singing in the church choir and playing piano and singing hymns at home with her daughter and granddaughter. She was an excellent seamstress, an active 4-H mom, and was always a teacher at heart. She maintained an upbeat spirit and accepted her adversities with a smile. Bernice never wanted to be a burden to anyone. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, her parents, brothers, Fermon Elley (who died in WWII) and Dayton Elley, and sister Jane Wuest. She is survived by her daughter Patsy Fleming Bolf, D.V.M. and husband Terry, one granddaughter, Kristi Bolf, a step-granddaughter, Kara Baggs and husband Colby, 3 step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Bernice's private caregivers, Lydia Mendoza, Delfena Espinoza, Pam McMillin, Sara Rodriguez and Sylvia Martinez, for making it possible for her to stay comfortably in her home the last year of her life. The family is also grateful to Nurses in Touch Hospice for their support and care, especially to Bernice's nurses, Nina, Kellie and Myra.
