Betty Wetz Dietert was born November 5, 1927, in Bexar County to Hilmar Jacob and Erna Rusch Wetz and passed away at the age of 83 on April 9, 2011. The family lived on what is now Stagecoach Road in Guadalupe County. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Marion, where her great grandparents were charter members. Betty and her siblings attended Scheffel School and she graduated Seguin High School in 1945. Under the big oak in the center of the dance floor at Landa Park in August of 1945, she met the love of her life, Gene Dietert. They married September 18, 1948 and lived in New Braunfels and were members of First Protestant Church. She worked for Civil Service at Randolph Air Force Base for several years before becoming a full time wife and mother. In 1959 they moved to Seguin when Gene became the Ford and Mercury Dealer. They joined Cross Church and after 52 years, she was still a member of the choir. In 2003 she was honored for her service to the church at the National Convention of the UCC. Along with being in the choir, she chaired or served numerous activities and organizations: Vacation Bible School, Church School, Youth Fellowship, Cub Scout Den Mother, Church Circle, Special Ministries Committee, Prayer Chain, President of the Women of the Church, Eden Home volunteer, Search Committees, Church Council, and Adult Christian Fellowship. In the community, she served as an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce, honored as Citizen of the Day, Mentor at Weinert Elementary, Senior Center volunteer, Seguin Conservation Society, Tejas Literary Club, PTA President, and Habitat for Humanity. Betty and Gene traveled extensively with Rotary International and hosted numerous foreign exchange students over the years. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Schlueter. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gene Dietert, daughter, Jenness, and her husband, Jody Gilles of Midland; son, Barry, and his wife Kim of Cibolo; brother, Ferman Wetz of Seguin. She was very proud of her grandchildren: Joshua Dietert of Austin, Leanna Gilles of Fort Worth, Ryan Dietert M.D., of Dallas, David Gilles of Denver, Rachel Dietert Witek and her husband, Adam, of San Marcos, and Abby Dietert of Cibolo, brother-in-law Darvin Dietert and wife Jeanette, brothers-in-law Glennvood Lenz and Floyd Mueller. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Cross Church, 814 Bauer Street, Seguin, Wednesday April 13, at 12 noon, with Rev. Jim Price officiating, following a private burial. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 12, from 2-7 pm at Tres Hewell Mortuary. The family will receive friends and family on Tuesday, April 12, from 5-7 pm. Pallbearers will be Joshua Dietert, Ryan Dietert, David Gilles, Adam Witek, Dale Dietert, Carey Dietert, and Steve Wetz. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cross Church, 814 Bauer, Seguin TX, 78155, or a charitable organization of choice.
