Carlton "Buzzy" Keller, born in Loyal Valley, Texas to Henry and Gladys Keller on September 3, 1933, passed away August 27, 2018 at the age of 84. He graduated from Mason High School and attended Texas A&M University where he marched in the Aggie band. Buzzy continued his education and received a BS from Texas Lutheran College as well as his Masters Degree from Southwest Texas State University. He signed a professional baseball contract with the Chicago Cubs following his graduation from TLC. He also served in the United States Army for two years. On October 6, 1956, he took Bertha Marie Johnson to be his wife at Palm Valley Lutheran Church.
Buzzy's long career in education and sports include teaching at Round Rock High School, Mason High School, and Texas Lutheran College. He coached, instructed, and scouted for numerous professional baseball organizations including: Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, and the Chicago Cubs. The Texas Rangers was the last team he was affiliated with, where he received two American League Championship rings.
Buzzy's professional baseball instruction included travels to the Netherlands, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, and Canada.
Coach Keller loved to coach. He volunteered at TLU with the football and baseball teams. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. One of Buzzy's favorite pastimes was going to the family cabin in Mason County to hunt and spend time on the ranch. Buzzy loved people, and he never met a stranger. Everyone who knew him would agree that he was a great storyteller. In fact, he never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Buzzy is survived by his wife, Bertha Marie, son Kevin Keller and wife Lori, son Kolin Keller and wife Julie, daughter Kerry Leigh Morawietz and husband Kary; grandchildren Raeanne Keller, Kakki Nutter and husband Matthew, Lexie Keller, Jake Keller and wife Jaimie, Jenna Keller, Kye Morawietz, Kory Morawietz, great granddaughter Raely Nutter, and sister in law Angela Keller, He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and too many friends to count!
Buzzy is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gladys Keller, brother Wayne Keller and wife LuJane, and brother Don Keller. Also, sister in law Glenda Keller and niece Peggy Keller.
A visitation for friends and family will be held on Friday, August 31 from 5 -7 at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin. Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin on Saturday, September 1, at 11:00 AM.
