Rev. Dr. Charles Edward Laing, Sr., (CMDR–USN Reserve Ret.), age 89, of Seguin, passed away on October 29, 2014. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Dugger Cemetery followed by a memorial service celebrating Charles' life at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Andy Smith, Rev. Ron Welborn, Rev. Jack Shelton and Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center. Charles was born on August 25, 1925 in Humble Texas to Richard and Hattie (Carr) Laing. He graduated from Waskom High School in Waskom Texas in 1942 and served as Student Body President. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, as a chaplain serving in Japan from 1953/54 and later retired from the United States Naval Reserves as Commander. He received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Centenary College in Shreveport, LA In 1948, and also served as Student Body President and President of Omicron Delta Kappa, his Bachelor of Divinity from the Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX in 1951, and served as Senior Class President, his Master of Education from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX in 1957 and his Doctorate of Divinity from Huston Tillotson College in Austin, TX in 1978. His pastoral appointments began in 1950 serving throughout the state of Texas and in Lake Charles Louisiana. He served as Campus Minister at Stephen F. Austin State University, Sam Houston State University and Lamar State University. He was the State Director of the Texas Methodist Student Movement from 1960 to 1970. He also served as Senior Minister at First United Methodist Churches in Marlin, Texarkana, and Burleson. He served on the Texas Methodist Foundation and later on the development staff of the Texas Methodist Foundation. In 1997 Charles was director of development: C.C. Young Retirement Home in Dallas. Throughout his ministry, Charles served on many boards and agencies, including Texas Conference for education, Christian vocations, social concerns, higher education and campus ministries (served as chairman), insurance committee, pensions (served as Chairman) and was a member of the Texas Conference Council, the UMSM Board at SMU and the Development Council at Centenary College. He served as secretary of the Ministerial Alliance in Marlin, TX and as President of the Ministerial Alliance in Texarkana, TX. He was a member of the Religious Emphasis Committee in Texarkana, Chair of the Citizens Bond Issue Committee GISD in Georgetown, Texas in 1984 and consultant for the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation in Seguin in 2009. He was also an active member of the National Association of United Methodist Foundation from 1978 – 1993 where he held several different offices and served on several committees. After retiring to Seguin, Charles and Peggy were members of First United Methodist Church. Charles was also a member of the Seguin Noon Rotary Club. He is preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Ann Donaldson Laing whom he married on June 14, 1958 and passed away on June 17, 2014, his parents, and his brothers, Richard D. Laing, Jr. and Jimmy J. Laing. Survivors include his children, Charles E. Laing, Jr. and wife Diana, Mary Elizabeth Springs and husband Wayne; and Nicole Balderas; grandchildren, Chelsea Elizabeth Laing, Charles Edward Laing, III, Elizabeth Faye Springs, Grace Ann Springs, Madison Nicole Springs and Calista Elizabeth Hardeman; other loving family members and many friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Blayne Hardeman, Adam Cain, Bobby Cain, Bill Corbett, Jack P. McCain, Jr., Jack P. McCain, III, Curtis Vick and Jim Price.
