Obituary

Charles Rudolph Wegner passed away on June 16, 2016 at the age
of 86. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a loyal friend to so many. Charles was born in San Antonio on January 17, 1930 to Rudolph John and Minnie Hierholzer Wegner. He graduated from Karnes City High School and enrolled in Southwest Texas Teachers College (now Texas State University) in 1948. He stayed until joining the Air Force in December of 1950. He was stationed at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, Scott Air Force Base in Bellville, Illinois and Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. After he was discharged from the Air Force, he returned to college at Southwest Texas and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in August of 1953. He went to work for the Texas Department of Banking as an Assistant Bank Examiner and served the Austin, Waco and San Antonio districts. He was then promoted to Senior Examiner and served the Austin, Houston and San Antonio districts. On July 1, 1962, Charles, his wife Frances, and their young family moved to Seguin, where he began a long and successful career with Seguin State Bank and Trust Company (now American Bank of Texas.) He was a senior vice president, trust officer and a member of the Board of Directors. He retired in 2001, but continued to work for the bank as a loan review officer for several years after his retirement. Charles was very active in both civic and church affairs. He was president of the Seguin Chamber of Commerce and also served for many years as the Chairperson of the Advanced Drive for the United Way. He was president of the Seguin Kiwanis Club and prided himself on 47 years of perfect attendance. He traveled to meetings and conventions in numerous states and foreign countries over the years. The Kiwanis Flapjack Jamboree was a favorite event of Charles' and for many years he won the award for selling the most tickets to this annual fundraiser! Over the years, Charles also served on the Guadalupe County Fair Board and the Mid-Texas Symphony Board of Directors where he was a charter member and co-treasurer. He also served as finance officer of the American Legion. After his retirement, Charles drove cancer patients to their weekly out-of-town treatments as part of the Road to Recovery Volunteer Organization. Charles was a lifelong Methodist and served his church faithfully in many capacities. Over the years, he was Chairperson of the Administrative Board, Chairperson of the Finance Committee and Chairperson of the Council on Ministries which he helped organize. He was also the treasurer of the First United Methodist Church Foundation from its organization in 1975 until 2004. He was an active member and treasurer of the Sharers Sunday School class since its beginnings. Charles was also a faithful usher for 38 years. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Frances Faseler Wegner, who he met in college and married on June 20, 1954. He is also survived by his daughter, Sharon Wegner Berg and husband Jim of San Antonio, daughter-in-law Linda Gail Wegner of Garland and son John Alan Wegner of Seguin, as well as his grandchildren Thomas Boyer (Ashley), Leslie Wegner, Michael Berg (Sarah), Lauren Vaughn (Taylor), Carrie Wegner and Will Wegner and nine great-grandchildren. Charles is also survived by his sister Marion Teal as well as many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, David Charles Wegner. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 710 North Austin Street in Seguin with Rev. Andy Smith officiating. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center of First United Methodist Church. Private interment will be held at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
