Obituary

Charlton M. Starcke, age 93 of Seguin, died on June 9, 2009. Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the family receiving friends from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by the recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, June 12, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Dennis Darilek officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. Charlton was born in Hugo, Oklahoma on April 27, 1916 to Francis X. and Leila Brieger Marx. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce from Southern Methodist University in 1937 and her Master of Education Degree from Colorado State University in 1949. She taught business courses in high school from 1937 to 1941. She taught business at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas from 19 47 to 1949. On July 31, 1949 she married H.H. Starcke, Jr. She served as president of the Seguin Shakespeare Club and the Seguin Study Club. She has been a member of St. James Catholic Church since 1949. She served as the President of the St. Joseph's School Board, was an active member of the St. Joseph's School, and was the librarian at St. Joseph's School for 10 years. She attended Our Lady of the Lake University and earned certification as an elementary and high school Librarian. She compiled a history of the first 100 years of St. James Catholic Church. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was named President Emeritus of the Affilation for the preservation of the Federate Club Rooms. Charlton is preceded in death by her husband, Hilmar H. Starcke, Jr., her parents, her brother, Frank Marx, Jr., her sister, Lois Catherine Bernard and her son-in-law, Layne Schmidt; survivors include her sons, Hilmar H. Starcke III, Francis X. Starcke, both of Seguin; daughter, Lalla Starcke Schmidt of Victoria; grandsons, Scott Schmidt and John Schmidt, both of Austin; granddaughters, Nora Starcke Compton and husband, Chris of New Braunfels and Charlton Claire Starcke of New Orleans; brother, Bill Marx, Sr.; several nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be Bobby Wuest, Harvey Wuest, Jr., Ed Hall, Dan Daniels, Timothy Terry and T. H. Terry , III. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Catholic School, The Women's Federated Club Rooms of Seguin or to the charity of one's choice.
