Doris Elizabeth (Henneke) Cowey was born on March 1, 1937 in Bexar County to Edward and Virgie (Pratt) Henneke and went to be with our Lord on August 30, 2018 at the age of 81. She married James Wendal Cowey on September 27, 1958 in Guadalupe County.
In the earlier years of 1971-1983, Doris and Jim were well known for their pies, wedding cakes, and cookies with the help of Mr. & Mrs. Dyess at Dyess Parkview Market, then expanding to local businesses such as Davila's BBQ, Judge's BBQ, and Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. They made an abundant number of wedding and birthday cakes for people in the community. She worked part-time from 1984 to 1990 as a rural postal carrier and still made cakes and pies on the side. She went full-time in 1990 and retired in 2002 as a postal carrier in New Braunfels. Doris and Jim did gardening and raised cattle all their lives and after retirement they joined the local Farmers Market. She loved sewing, making quilts, and embroidering. She loved spending time with each one of the grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her sons, James E Cowey and wife Leann, Stephen W Cowey and wife Paulette, and David W Cowey; her grandchildren, Krystle Gillett and husband Brandon, Sarah Newman and husband Michael, Collin Cowey, David H Cowey, Shelby Cowey, and step-grandson Glen Cowey; one great-grandchild, Scarlett Gillett; sister Flois Carlin and husband Bob; numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 54 years.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 3, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Neil Kibbe officiating. Interment will follow in Dugger Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Collin Cowey, David H Cowey, Arno Wayne Grimm, Brandon Grimm, Albert Cowey, and Christopher Grimm.
