Obituary

Dorothy Giesick Burris, age 93 of Seguin, passed away on August 16, 2021.

Dorothy was born on a farm in Guadalupe County on October 16 th , 1927, to Louis and Lydia (Jahns) Giesick.  She was baptized at Emanuel's Lutheran Church in Seguin.

She started school at Laubach School but the family moved to the Marion area and then attended school at Santa Clara School through the 7 th grade. She and other family members did farm work.  She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marion.

At the age of 16, she went to the town of Seguin and got a job at Troy's Grocery Store. She lived in Seguin with a Mrs. Grimm on Mountain Street and became friends of many people through her contacts at the store. Her employer, Mr. & Mrs. Troy Dykes, took her to the baseball games and other places she had never been.

While delivering groceries to Mrs. Emma Burris in Seguin, she met Mrs. Burris' son, Sonny. In 1949 she and Sonny Burris married.  In 1951 their only child, Michael was born.

She then returned to work at Baenziger's Model Market in Seguin, where she worked in the butcher shop six years.  During this time Sonny and Dorothy started playing dominos ("42") with their friends, the Seilers and Pinters. Soon they were going on vacations with the Seilers and Pinters; Dorothy favorite vacations were to Colorado. They also went traveling with her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ray. They traveled in their trailers. They made quite a few trips to the western United States, Ohio Amish country, and Branson, Missouri.

Dorothy left the supermarket and started work at United Cotton Goods, also known in Seguin at that time as the sewing factory. She worked there 17 years.

Sonny and Dorothy retired and moved to the country southeast of Seguin. They both enjoyed the country life and had a large garden; they shared the produce with relatives and friends. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and collecting recipes.  She collected coffee mugs from travels and from friends and relatives and had over 120 mugs.

Dorothy then worked as a cafeteria lady at Jefferson Ave. Elementary School for 12 years. She had to quit work to stay home with Sonny, who developed cancer. They then moved back to town. She devoted all her her time taking care of him; he passed away in 1998.

After Sonny passed away, Dorothy volunteered at the RSVP and read with the first graders at Koennecke Elementary School for 12 years. In 2009 she was Children's Literacy Volunteer of the year. She also volunteered at the Christian Cupboard for twelve years and quit when she decided that she could no longer drive. She also volunteered for the Salvation Army, ringing the bell for donations for many years.

She was a member of Emanuel's Lutheran Church for 65-years before joining Faith Lutheran Church.  She enjoyed reading inspirational books, doing word puzzles and board games.

She loved her neighbors and helped them whenever she could, as long as she was able, and she enjoyed it.

Thanks so much to her very special friend, Eva Graham, who was always there for her when Mike couldn't be there; she was a great help. Her family and friends were very special to her and she enjoyed being with them.

She was preceded in her death by her parents, her husband, sisters and in-laws: Etta Mae Schmoekel and husband Eugene and Betty Wiederstein and husband Ray.

Also preceding her were her brother and sisters in law and spouses: Roy Burris (Emma), Lettye Hester (Clyde), J.B. Burris (Rene), Carl Burris (Margaret), Floyd Burris (Ora), Pete Burris (Dorothy), Lorene Bruns (Bennie), Ednah Hageman (Bob).

She is survived by her son, Michael Burris, close friend Eva Graham, and numerous nieces and nephews.
