Dorothy Glenn Cobb Purdon, age 93 passed away on April 2, 2012, exactly four years after her husband Alan's death. Dorothy and Alan were married 65 years. Graveside services and interment will be held Thursday April 5, 2012 at 10 am at Nixon Cemetery in Nixon, TX with Rev. Dr. Carl McCauley officiating. Born in Sinton, Texas to Thomas Clarence Cobb and Leona Jane Ford Cobb on October 23, 1918, Dorothy was inspired to go into teaching by her father who was a school superintendent. Dorothy graduated from Texas State College in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She received her Masters of Education from the University of Houston in 1951.On April 23, 1943 she married Alan Willyard Purdon in the First Methodist Church of Nixon, Texas. Alan was on active duty and returned to Nixon the day of the wedding. Unfortunately, his plane was late and the wedding was delayed several hours. All of congregation waited for him to arrive: the ceremony didn't start until after midnight. Dorothy taught elementary school in San Antonio, Houston, and Austin, Texas. When Alan was called back to military service to be stationed in Tokyo, Japan, she joined him and continued her teaching career. She reported that her Texas drawl was a little confusing to the Japanese students learning English. She often talked about her time in Japan; she said it was one of the highlights of her life. Dorothy and Alan had a weekend lake house on Lake Travis. There, they often entertained their nieces and nephews. Alan taught them all to ski and Dorothy (Aunt Dorothy) prepared wonderful meals on the lower patio by the lake. Many visits included fish fry's, barbecues, and long relaxing evenings on warm summer nights. Dorothy was an avid skier and was so accomplished that she could ski around the lake and return to the dock with her hair still perfectly in place. She loved traveling and spent many vacations in Mexico where she collected holiday decorations. Her Christmas trees were decorated each year with Mexican dolls and small sombreros. But teaching was her passion and she taught for over 40 years. Dorothy was quoted as saying "my husband compares me to the fire horse that looks for the fire when the fire bell rings; I look for a place to teach every September when the school bell rings."Dorothy is survived by nieces and nephews; Pat Cobb of New Braunfels, Dorothy Hammond of Baltimore, MD, Mike Cobb of New Braunfels, Lynda Brandes of New Braunfels, and Nancy Cobb of Kuwait City, Kuwait. She is preceded in death by her husband Alan Purdon and her three brothers, Thomas Clarence Cobb, William Ford Cobb, and John Robert Cobb.
