Obituary

Douglas Brown Finch, born October 18, 1920, to Bertram C. Finch and Mary Lee Brown Finch in Spartanburg, SC, died in Seguin, Texas, December 8, 2014. He served his country during World War II in the South Pacific as a fighter pilot of P47s and P51 Mustangs. Following the war, he returned to Spartanburg briefly where he met the love of his life, Mildred Freeland. They were married in 1952 and settled in Montgomery, AL, where he opened Finch Insurance Agency. In 1956 he moved his family to Texas, where he attended Austin College in Sherman and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1962. He served First Presbyterian Church in Haskell, Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church in The Woodlands, and other Presbyterian churches on a supply basis, including First Presbyterian Church in Liberty. He was the organizing minister of Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church, the mayor of Haskell, TX, and the author of a book published in 1983, The Attitude of Love. Doug loved to travel and visited 156 countries and all 7 continents with members of his immediate family. He cherished the adventures, memories, and relationships from these traveling years. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mildred, and four children: Rebecca (Bob Carpenter) of Austin, TX; Cindy (Ken Smith) of Boise, ID; Stephen of Seguin TX; and Nan (Cherie Simpson) of Austin, TX; as well as six grandchildren: Jonathan Carpenter of Portland, OR; Emily Carpenter of Austin, TX; Patrick Smith (Sarah) of Vancouver, BC; Evan Smith of Salt Lake City, UT; Lisa Pacheco (Tino) of San Marcos, TX; and two great-grandchildren, Diego Pacheco and Avery Pacheco of San Marcos, TX; and his nieces and nephews in North Carolina and South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Frances Hartenstein Finch and many family members of his generation in the Carolinas. He always described his family as "my greatest source of personal fulfillment and joy." He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Diercksen officiating, 305 N. King St., Seguin, TX. A reception will follow in Karrick Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.
