Obituary

Douglas Dean Wiehe was born to Lawrence F. and Thelma A. Wiehe on December 22, 1926 in Centralia, Illinois and went to be with the Lord April 12, 2015 at the age of 88 years.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence & Thelma Wiehe and his only brother Larry Wiehe.

He is survived by his wife Donna Wiehe, children: son Steve Wiehe, wife Sue of Austin, grandchildren Kristen & Clay, son Don Wiehe, wife Beth of Houston, granddaughter Morgan, and daughter Angela Woodbridge, husband Mark of Austin and grandchildren Josh, and Kelsey Schroeder and husband Brent.

Douglas enlisted in the US Army in 1944, serving with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Germany and the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1944 after graduating from high school he enrolled into the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York.

He became a Texan in 1949 at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, where he met Donna Miller. They were married in 1951.

Doug received a Bachelor degree in Music Education and a Master of Arts degree in Musicology from NTSU and a Doctorate in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. He was a member of Phi Beta Mu, National Honor Music Fraternity.

He was high school band director in Beeville and Big Spring, TX, one of the band directors and a music professor at University of North Texas, band director Southwest Texas State University and was Supervisor of Fine Arts at Brazosport Independent School District for 25 years, serving the Texas public schools and colleges for 46 years.

In Big Spring in the 60's, his high school band had numerous consecutive UIL Sweepstakes awards and in 1964 his band had the largest number of Texas All State music students of any city in Texas.

Doug was the Executive Secretary for the University Interscholastic League Music Region 17 for over 20 years, served on several UIL state advisory committees as well as being the Texas Music Educators Association region chairman and member of the TMEA state board.

He also served as member of the Texas State Textbook Committee and for 10 years as BISD representative to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Show.

In 2006 Douglas was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame.

Before moving to Seguin he and Donna were members of Riverside Country Club and enjoyed golfing, sports, music, traveling, reading, and being with their children and grandchildren. After retirement Doug also enjoyed continued involvement with music students and former colleagues in UIL activities. Additionally he played bass clarinet in the San Antonio Municipal Band and assisted Donna with the children's music department at Hillcrest Church, Seguin, Texas. Doug was an active member of Hillcrest Church. In lieu of flowers please give memorial gifts to Hillcrest Church, PO Box 267, Seguin, Texas 78156.
