Obituary

Edward Diaz Castillo, age 95 of Zorn, Texas, was called home on May 31, 2023. Edward was born on August 12, 1927, in Temple, Texas to Paula (Diaz) and Ernest Castillo.

In his early years, Edward attended Allen Military Academy where he learned & developed a love for the sport of boxing. His proficiency in this sport led to an opportunity for him to tour the country as a semi-professional boxer and later his passion for coaching.

Edward also had a passion for education. He put himself through college and was a proud graduate of Texas A &M at College Station class of 1954 with a degree in physical education. He told stories of hitchhiking between his home in Temple and College Station on some weekends and most holidays.

Coach Castillo met Lilia Mendoza in Ben Bolt, Texas and they were married on July 21, 1957, at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in San Diego, Texas. Together they raised their family of 3 children in Corpus Christi, Waco, San Marcos, & finally Dallas, Texas where Edward retired as a career counselor with the Dallas Independent School District.

Upon his retirement, Edward & Lilia moved to Zorn, Texas in 1988, and purchased their retirement property. They were very active for many years with the St James Catholic Church in Seguin TX.

Edward is preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Lilia Mendoza Castillo his parents and siblings; Jimmy Castillo, Rosa Garcia, Joe Castillo, Jessie Castillo, Ernest Castillo, Rosie Lucero, Henry Castillo, & Janie Castillo.

Survivors include son, Edward Castillo Jr.; daughters, Lilia Castillo Jones and Judy Castillo; precious grandchildren, Ezekiel (Zeke) Edward Jones and Zoe Allena Castillo-Ross; numerous beloved nieces, nephews & other loving family members, and friends.

Visitation will begin on Wednesday the 7th of June at 9:00 am, under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:30 am. A procession will depart Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel, same day (June 7th) at 10:00 a.m. for the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in Seguin at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 409 W Krezdorn St. with the Rev. Robert DeLong officiating.  A reception will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1015 S. Austin St. Seguin, Texas 78155

Serving as pallbearers will be Zeke Jones, Rick Castillo, Reuben Castillo, Ralph Castillo, Manuel Gonzales, Steve Mendoza.

Graveside services and interment will be on Thursday the 8th of June at the Lopez Family Cemetery in the Loma Alta community near San Diego, Texas at 11:00 am.
