Obituary

Elizabeth Lu Jean Looper, age 85 of Seguin passed away on October 8, 2010. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 11, 2010 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 11 to 6 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Seguin with Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. Interment will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. An only child, Lu Jean was born on March 10, 1925 in Granger, Texas to William McKinley and Bertha Kate Bryant Holstine. She was a graduate of Granger High School and was 3rd highest in her class. She attended college in North Texas State University and Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Southwest Texas State University in English with a minor in History and Education. She later received her Master of Arts from Southwest Texas State University with a major in English and a minor in Library Science. In college she was a member of Alpha Chi Sorority. Since 1967 she has been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Lu Jean gave her heart to Jesus on July 12, 1937, age 12 years, at First Baptist Church, Granger, Texas and was baptized that same night. Lu Jean met Arthur Ansel Looper while she was attending college at Southwest Texas State University. He was in the service during that time. They married and moved to Seguin in 1945 where both served as educators in the Seguin Independent School District. They joined the First Baptist Church in Seguin September 1945. While attending college, Lu Jean worked in the Southwest Texas State University Library and was hand picked by "Papa Joe" Saegert to come to the Seguin ISD. She served 8 years as the Seguin High School Librarian and 21 years as the Joe F. Saegert Librarian. She also served as the librarian of First Baptist Church. Lu Jean was proud to have a school annual dedicated to her and was awarded a life membership in the PTA. She was a member of WMU and the Esther Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. She was a member of the retired teachers association since 1985. Her husband and her parents preceded her in death, as well as her step-mother Lorena Holstine. Survivors include her son, Bill Looper and wife Julia; daughter, Teresa Kay Baker and husband David; grandchildren, Vickie Wilson, Gina Morris and husband T. K., James Baker, Joshua Looper, and Katie Looper; great-grandchildren, Aaron Wilson and Taylor Morris; numerous other family members and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of First Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Library, 1314 E. Cedar St., Seguin, Texas, 78155 or to the Friends of the Library, c/o Seguin-Guadalupe County Public Library, 707 E. College St., Seguin, Texas, 78155-3217.
