Ellen Hays Raetzsch, age 77, of Seguin, passed away on May 11, 2008 in Seguin. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. at Emanuel's Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul J. Zwarich officiating. Interment will be private. Mrs. Raetzsch was born on January 20, 1931 in Washington D.C. to Silas Beach and Marjorie Murtagh Hays. Ellen attended Mount Vernon College for Women in Washington D C and Washington College in Maryland before meeting her future husband, Andrew Raetzsch at the first social event she attended after recovering from polio. Before being stricken with polio she had been Junior Women's Tennis Champion for Washington D C. Ellen lived in New York, Hawaii and Japan before moving back to Washington prior to her father becoming Surgeon General of the United States Army. After marrying her husband, Andrew, she moved with him to his home town of Seguin in the early 1950's, where Andrew, following in his deceased father's footsteps, opened his own medical practice. Ellen was a homemaker who devoted herself to her husband and children. Ellen had a lively personality and was a friend to all. Her husband, Andrew Raetzsch, M.D. precedes her in death as did her parents. Survivors include her sons, A. Robert Raetzsch and wife Donna, Dr. Thomas Raetzsch and wife Beth; daughter, Kathy Taddy and husband John; brother, James M. Hays; grandchildren, Laura Raetzsch and fiancé Adam Unnasch, Amy Raetzsch, Ted Raetzsch, Michael Raetzsch, Andrew Raetzsch, and Alexander Raetzsch Taddy; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel's Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis, Seguin, Texas, 78155 or to the charity of choice.
