Obituary

Evelyn Maxine Adams Homan passed away the morning of Thursday, June 6, 2013 having attained the age of 90 years, 10 months. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved her. Evelyn Maxine Adams Homan, daughter of the late Samuel Hubbard and Mattie Langdon Adams, was born July 27, 1922 in Otterville, Missouri, wife of the late Ernest Edward Homan, and mother of Wanda, Eddie, Wilma and Winona. Evelyn's first loves were always her faith in God, her husband, and her children. Evelyn was a woman of faith who supported the Tipton First Baptist Church until she died. She always appreciated the cards, letters, and gifts the ladies of the church would send to her. She also knew if anything went wrong and needed to be repaired in her home after Ernest died, one of the gentlemen of the church would help. She often said that she and God were taking one day at a time together. Her faith was very comforting to her as she grew older. Throughout her life, Evelyn was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was very proud when she received her sixty year membership pin in 2012. As a young girl, Evelyn Maxine Adams attended school in Otterville. One thing Evelyn was very proud of was when she played basketball in high school. Her love of basketball continued throughout her life. Evelyn knew the names of every basketball player on the University of Missouri's basketball team for years and watched every game she could. When she moved to Texas, she became a San Antonio Spurs fan and often watched their games. Within the last year, Tony Parker, a starter for the San Antonio Spurs, heard about Evelyn's devotion to the team and sent her a personal letter with an autographed picture. Evelyn married the love of her life, Ernest Edward Homan, on July 27, 1940, her eighteenth birthday. They were together for the next 55 years. Their first home was small, in the country near Florence, MO. In 1945, the Homan family moved to Syracuse and farmed until 1949. In 1949 Homan's Hardware Store started from the purchase of a local business; Ernest and Evelyn later started Homan's Plumbing Service. Evelyn's early life was spent in Otterville and Florence, most of her married life was in Syracuse and Tipton. She spent her golden years in Waynesville, MO and Seguin, TX. In 1959, the Homan family moved to Tipton. During these years, Evelyn worked as a cook for the Tipton School District. She later worked at Fischer Manufacturing as a screen printer and later as a cook at the Tipton Manor Nursing Home before retiring. While working at the nursing home, Evelyn rarely took health or vacation days. She was always very dedicated to her work commitments. One time when it was extremely snowy and cold, Evelyn even called the Tipton police and asked them to take her to work. When Ernest was hurt in 1968, Evelyn immediately started working two jobs: at the school cafeteria and at the Ben Franklin Store. While working at the nursing home, she got in the habit of waking at 4:00am, a habit she continued until the end of her life. She was always very frugal and rarely would spend money on herself. However, she was very kind and giving to her children. Evelyn was a gifted cook and artist. She was featured in the Tipton Times as such in the 1970's. Her family will miss her delicious egg noodles and cherry cobbler. She participated in many arts and crafts activities through the years including oil painting and ceramics, and had beautiful handwriting. She also loved all handcrafts and was very gifted at watching someone's craft and coming home and doing it herself. Evelyn's teachers would not allow her to use her left hand which was her natural inclination; however, she often did her crafts left-handed rather than right-handed. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, braiding rugs, knitting, and crocheting rugs. As she aged, she loved to sew quilt blocks together. She spent many summers teaching children the love of crafts at Vacation Bible School at Syracuse Baptist Church and Tipton First Baptist Church. Evelyn was very proud of the many blue ribbons she won at the Tipton and California fairs for her canning, baked goods, and handcrafts. Evelyn also loved flower and vegetable gardening, She often worked all day, then would come home and can tomatoes and green beans or make jams or juice until bed time. Her yard was always full of iris, peonies, sultana, rose bushes, four-o'clocks, and lilac bushes. Evelyn also loved to read and wrote a book about her life for her children, but would never let them read it until after she died. During their marriage, Ernest and Evelyn were blessed with four children. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Wanda Rau, of Chamois, Missouri; her son Eddie and his wife Wanda, of Sequin, Texas; her daughter Willie Strange and her husband Jim of Sequin, Texas; and her daughter Winona Anderson and her husband Tom of Waynesville, MO. She had 12 grandchildren: Kathy Thompson, Vicki Dudley, John Rau, Ellen Henderson, Rhonda Geddy, Stacy Mitchell, Tammy Kelsey, Eddie Homan Jr., Michael Holdman, David Holdman, Taryn Anderson, and Kyle Anderson, 27 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by one sister, Susanna Homan, of Sedalia. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 5 sisters, and 1 brother.
