Florence Irene Haugen, age 84, of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 12, 2015. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard Mittelstadt officiating. A reception will follow in the Grace Lutheran Church Parish Hall. Graveside services and interment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Clifton, Texas on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 2 p.m. with Deaconess Pat Gorton officiating.
Florence was born to Walter John and Marie Elizabeth Barbara (Boerger) Matthys on July 15, 1930 in Wharton Texas. She lived in Wharton County until 1944. She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church for more than 50 years, attending the first worship service there in 1947. Florence received an undergraduate degree from Texas Lutheran College and a Master's degree from Southwest Texas State College, both in Education. She worked as a teacher and school administrator for more than 30 years, primarily as a math and science teacher for the Seguin School District. She enjoyed volunteer activities with a number of organizations including the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, the Salvation Army, and her church.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Harrison "Bob" Haugen, her parents, brother, George Matthys and wife Laura; sister, Marguerite Donsbach and husband Siegfried "Sieg"; brothers-in-law, Frank Johnson, Donald Koehler and Doyle "Doc" Borchers; and sister-in-law, Esther Murrell and husband Francis "Dick". Survivors include her son, Robert Haugen and wife Leslie; daughter, Marie Hill and husband Harvey; grandchildren, Christine, Kevin and Mark Haugen, Nick Borrelli and wife Beth, John Borrelli and wife Katherine, and Michael, Elizabeth, and Caroline Hill; great-grandchildren, Isabella and John "Jack" Borrelli, and Roman Borrelli; sisters, Ruby Johnson, Thelma Koehler, and Sharron Vogel and husband Virgil; brother, Leroy Matthys and wife Barbara; sisters-in-law, Dorothea Borchers and Thora George and husband Phil; numerous nieces and nephews, other loving family members and a host of friends.
