Garland Arch Powers, Jr., age 86 of Zorn, passed away on June 1, 2010. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Graveside services with military honors will be held at the Staples Cemetery in Staples on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 9:15 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Seguin with Rev. Don Duvall, Rev. Bob Odom and Rev. Nell Linebarger officiating. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center. Garland was born on March 27, 1924 in Frederick, Ok to Garland A. Powers, Sr. and Georgina Scott Powers. At age 8 years old he moved to Seguin and later graduated from Seguin High School in 1941. During his younger years, he became an Eagle Scout. Afterwards, he attended A & M however, took a break to enlist in WWII as a Marine. Following the war he returned to A & M to complete and graduate with his Bachelors Degree in Animal Science, class of 1945. He then took a job as an Assistant County Agent in Matagorda County. He continued his service for the country serving in Korean Conflict. He married Mildred Harris on July 16, 1955 and went to work as a ranch manager for Hi -Lo Ranch located in the Trinity River Bottom which is now under Lake Livingston. In 1958, they moved to Staples and farmed and ran cattle in the Staples and Zorn area. On April 19, 1960 their son, Garland A. Powers, III (G III) was born. As a family of three, they worked and organized Crystal Clear Water Supply. Garland, Jr. oversaw the operations for the system for many years and then turned over the operations however continued to serve as a Board of Director until his death. In 1965, G. A. Powers Co., a Plumbing, Water Utility, Pipe, and Septic Wholesale Distributor business was established. He also organized and served on York Creek Improvement Board and Starlite Dance Club. He was a very Christian man who always put family first and had a pleasant word for everyone. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Staples. He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Harris Powers; son Garland Powers, III and wife Debbie; brother, Clyde Powers and wife Maribeth; sister, Bonnie Barnes; grandchildren, Tiffany Powers Munk and husband Andrew and Garland A.
