Obituary

Dr. Harold Dean Bier, age 82 of Seguin, passed away on September 5, 2013. Dr. Bier was born in Milton-Freewater Oregon on May 19, 1931. He grew up in the East Side Community and attended elementary school there. He was a graduate of McLaughlin High School Class of 1949. With the start of the Korean War he volunteered for Air Force service. He was stationed on Okinawa with the 20th air force headquarters for two years. That was followed by a year and a half at Altus, Oklahoma. After the service he attended West Texas State College where he received a BS degree in Chemistry. Dr. Bier next worked for the Food and Drug Administration in New Orleans, La. Graduate school at Texas A & M University came next. There he received a MA and a PHD in Physical Chemistry. Texas Lutheran College (Texas Lutheran University) was his employer for over 30 years. There he served as Chemistry department chairman and advisor to pre-med students. While there he was made a full professor and received an academic chair. He retired in 1996. During his tenure at TLC he did summer work at the University of Oklahoma, Montana State, University of Wisconsin, University of Colorado (twice), University of South Carolina and did a sabbatical the University of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna Bier and his youngest daughter Sandy Oakley. He is survived by Lucille Bier, his wife of 60 years; daughters, Sue Hutchins and husband Jimmy and Deana Schepp; son-in-law, Tracy Oakley; brothers, Jim Bier and wife Pauline and Bud Bier; grandchildren, Andrew Komm and wife Sarah, Brian Schepp and wife Elizabeth, Kevin Schepp and companion Shayna, Erica Schepp, Monica Schepp, Cindy Schepp, Austin Oakley, Wyatt Oakley and Ian Oakley; numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Bier enjoyed traveling and had visited every state in the United States and 39 foreign countries. Among his favorite hobbies were working with his cattle and fly fishing. He loved the mountains and wilderness areas. His proudest moments came from the achievements of his children, grandchildren and ex-students. The love of his family was the light of his life. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of the Guadalupe Valley Nursing Center for the loving tender care they gave Dr. Bier. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at McQueeney Baptist Church in McQueeney with Rev. Jim Muse officiating. Interment will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
