Obituary

Helen Crump died June 11, 2018, aged 99 years, 8 months and 8 days. She was born October 3, 1918 in Seguin, the daughter of Frederick Smith and Lillian Woehler Smith. Following in her father's footsteps, she received her early education at St. Joseph/St. James Catholic School. She graduated from Seguin High School and attended Texas Lutheran College studying business administration.

Helen met Tom Crump, the love of her life, on a blind date when he came to Seguin to teach building trades at Seguin High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941 and they were married May 10, 1942 at the Corpus Christi Naval Base. She then returned to Seguin to wait while he served in every major theater during World War II. Upon his return, they founded Crump's Woodwork and Lumber Yard in 1945, a business destined to continue for fifty years. They raised two sons.

Helen was a lifelong member of St. James Catholic Church where she served in various capacities over the years, such as member of the parish council and president of St. Ann's Circle. She was tireless in her efforts to support the church and St. James Catholic School. With donations from her aunt, Josie Smith, Helen and her husband provided materials and labor to remodel the rectory and the convent above the school. They installed the restroom in the church and built the school restrooms in the present Pre-K area. Helen began the school library with a two-shelf bookcase in the hallway near today's school offices. When soaring expenses and limited resources threatened to leave no alternative but to close the school's doors in the 1980s, Helen headed the fund-raising efforts to raise $70,000 and save the school.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters, by her husband of 46 years and by her elder son, Thomas R. Crump. She is survived by her son, James F. Crump, and her daughter-in-law, Theresa Crump, both of Seguin. Her surviving grandchildren are Kim Morris and husband Mark of Waco, Valerie Bushmelev and husband Boris of Bergen, Norway, Jon Crump and girlfriend Andrea Moreno of Seguin, Jennifer Crump and Shannon Crump, both of Austin, and Wade Ohnheiser and wife Lavonne of Seguin. Her great-grandsons are Erik, Andreas, Daniel, Tomas and Nickolai of Bergen, Norway, and her great-granddaughter, Megan Ohnheiser of Seguin, is a fifth generation St. James student. Helen is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
