Irma Lewis, age 79, passed from life to life early morning September 16, 2013 at Texsan Heart Hospital in San Antonio, TX. She was surrounded by loving friends, her beloved pastor, and caring staff. She spoke to each of us individually, letting us know it was time to let her go. Irma graduated From Texas State Teachers College (now Texas State University) and earned her Master's degree from Sam Houston State University. She began her teaching/coaching career in Deer Park, TX and then taught at Burbank High School in California. She spent 19 years with the Brazosport Independent School District. She was hired by superintendent and mentor Jim Barnes to teach at Seguin High School in 1974. She initiated, organized and coached the first girls' athletic programs in track, cross county and basketball. She also served as assistant athletic director. She retired from SHS in 1993 and went to work that same year at Texas State University where she was still employed at the time of her death. Irma was just starting her 59th consecutive year in education. Irma was very involved in the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She served as President of the organization. She founded the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center where literally thousands of children learn about the great outdoors. She was instrumental in helping establish Buck Fever. Perhaps, her favorite achievement of all was that of Team Dance Captain of the Sterling Silver Dancers for the San Antonio Spurs! Go! Spurs! Go! Irma is preceded in death by her mother and father, Gladys and "Wendy" Arnold and her sister Bettye Partridge. Survivors include her niece Carolyn Billings and husband Mark; nephew John Partridge; great-nephew Brandon Hamm and wife Deanna and their baby boy, Frank. She also leaves behind numerous cousins and many loved family members and friends far too numerous to name. She leaves her lifelong best friend and constant companion Lisa Capell. Irma's life is a most beautiful example of a life well lived. She lived each and every day to its fullest and wanted the same for each of us. She taught us well. We will continue life's journey honoring her through living well. Kindness and patience and forgiveness were the cornerstones of Irma's life. May she finally rest well and safely in the arms of her loving heavenly Father. A memorial service celebrating Irma's life will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Goldie Harris Gymnasium with Rev. Karen Horan and Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. A reception will follow immediately at the Oak Park Mall Administrative Complex. Private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers and because of Irma's love for children, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center, 1865 East US Hwy. 90, Seguin Texas, 78155.
