Obituary

Jack Worth Harkins, age 83 of Seguin, passed away on January 20, 2012. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Rosary will be recited Monday, January 23, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Gregory J. Nevlud officiating. Interment with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion H.U. Wood Post 245 will follow in St. James Catholic Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Catholic Daughter's Hall. Jack was born on May 27, 1928 in Killeen, Texas to Worth and Velma Harkins. Mr. Harkins was a graduate of Seguin High School and served with U.S. Navy during Korean Conflict. He was a longtime employee of Cutcher Motor and Gillespie Ford. He was a life long member of St. James Catholic Church. He was 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and served as a Grand Knight. He loved reading, bowling, and spending time with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law Richard "Dick" Bedford and Benjamin Valenta, and sister-in-law, Frances Young Stock. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Fanny Harkins; son, Jay Harkins; daughters, Debi Holz and husband Kyle, and Nancy Mercer and husband Doug; grandchildren, Bree Holz-Gonzales and husband Roger, Sondra Lehmann and husband Keenan, Stefan Schriewer, Ryan Holz, Dylan Harkins, Cade Mercer, and Michaela Mercer; great granddaughter, Raelyn Gonzales; brothers, Billy Harkins and wife Ebbie, and Tommy Harkins and wife Linda; sister, Lenda Bedford; sister-in-law, Sophie Valenta; brother-in-law, Sam Stock and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members, as well as many friends. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Library, c/o Seguin-Guadalupe County Public Library, 707 E. College St, Seguin, TX 78155.
