Land was born and raised in Seguin, Texas. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1965 and continued his education at Southwest Texas State University. Upon graduation in 1969 he had completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and satisfied the requirements for a Texas teaching certificate. After enlisting in the National Guard, he taught in Stockdale ISD, Smiley ISD and then spent the remaining 31 years of his career at La Vernia ISD; where he retired in 2008. James' passion in life was hunting. He spent much of his leisure time in the fields and brush of South Texas. He was a man of honor who believed strongly in education and the simple truths that could be learned from hard work. He taught many young people about science but more importantly about character and discipline. In much the same way James' family was extremely important in his life. He worked tirelessly to model integrity, honesty and love to all those who knew him as a husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a member of the Stockdale Masonic Lodge #470 AF & AM. James is preceded in death by his son, Timothy Wayne Land, his parents Cleatus Land and Doris Seay Nevins, his brother, Frank Howard Land, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Prentice and Ella Mae Adams.
