James McRay "Mac" Sumner, age 72, passed away June 24, 2016 in San Antonio. Graveside service and interment with military honors will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at San Geronimo Cemetery at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. James was born September 29, 1943 in Gonzales, TX to James and Rose Nell (Moffett) Sumner. James grew up in Cuero and was a graduate of Cuero High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Green Beret during two tours in Vietnam. He served in law enforcement at both Trinity University and Texas Lutheran University. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Joyce, and his former wife and friend, Yvonne Sumner. Survivors include those he called his children, Greg Kern and wife Frances, Debbie Kern and husband Alan Plotkin, Brenda Volpe and husband Bruce, and Lance Kern and wife Claire Barrett; grandchildren, Mallory, Manuel, Junior, Lyann, Haley, Kai, Evan, and Ava; great-grandchildren, Camila and Abram; numerous other loving family members and friends.
