IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jimmie L.
Flakes, Jr.
May 6, 1942 – May 6, 2025
Reverend Jimmie Lee Flakes, Jr., age 83 of Seguin, passed away surrounded by his loving family on May 6, 2025. Jimmie was born on May 6, 1942 in Holland, Texas to Valley Mae (Thomas) and Jimmie Lee Flakes, Sr.
Born on May 6, 1942, in Holland, Texas to Vallie Mae Thomas and Jimmie Lee Flakes, Sr., Jimmie showed his calling from an early age, often gathering his aunts and cousins to listen to him "pretend preach." His spiritual foundation was established in his hometown church, where he joined and sang in the choir. He was an accomplished student, graduating second in his class from Dunbar High School in Temple, Texas.
Jimmie's early career included working at the former Scott and White Hospital (now Baylor), where he lifted spirits by singing for his co-workers. His pursuit of education led him to St. Philip's College and Texas Southern University, where he became a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. While pursuing his education, he was also on a quest for love. During semester break, he met and fell in love with Dorothy Wilson, whom he wed before embarking on his next journey. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force as both a medic and an air policeman, including service during the Vietnam War. In the midst of continuing his education, Jimmie and Dorothy would begin their beautiful family with the birth of their first daughter. He later finished his education at St. Mary's University. After graduating, the couple would go on to complete their family with two more daughters.
Reverend Flakes' ministerial journey was marked by faithful leadership at several Texas churches, including Colorado Baptist Church in Smithville, Bethel Union Baptist Church in Giddings, Second Baptist Church in Seguin, Palestine Baptist Church and New Mount Pleasant Berean Baptist Church, both in Victoria. Reverend Flakes then returned to Second Baptist Church, where he served until the Lord called him home. His dedication to theological education was recognized with a Doctorate of Divinity from Guadalupe Baptist Theological Seminary.
Reverend Flakes also served as the First Vice-Moderator and Fiscal Affairs Officer of the American Baptist Eastern General Association of Texas (the "Grand Ole East") for more than ten years, where he would lead in the achievement of significant growth.
Beyond the pulpit, Reverend Flakes was deeply committed to community service and professional excellence. He served as a city council member in both Giddings and Seguin, as well as a school board member for the Victoria Independent School District. As a community activist, he tirelessly advocated for equality, youth development, civil rights, and veterans affairs in each city he called home.
His professional career included roles as Deputy Land Commissioner for Texas, Director in the Office of Minority Business Affairs in Austin, Director of Personnel, and Associate Deputy Commissioner of the Texas Land Office. He was also the owner of Flakes Enterprises, a janitorial business, while teaching classes to help others develop job interview skills.
Reverend Flakes was an active member of the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, as well as Community Council of South Central Texas, further extending his influence through membership in the service organizations. He was also an active member of the Guadalupe County Ministerial Association.
Reverend Flakes was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie, Sr. and Vallie Mae, and brother, M.J. Loving. He leaves behind a treasured family who will cherish his memory: his wife of 58 years, Dorothy L. Flakes; daughters: Donitha Hadnot (Dynetro), Dionne Flakes, and Dormetris Martin (Lee); grandchildren: Genesis, Ahmani, Ganaia, Daniel (Rashonda), Joshua (Madison), Dymaia, Jordan, and Gyvena; and great-grandchildren: Bryson and Javaughn.
The family of Rev. Flakes would like to extend special thanks to the Interim Pastor of Second Baptist Church, Rev. Jessie Everline (Jonique) for his continued prayers, visits and counsel with the family; Tanisha Hearn (Dion) for the many days and hours supporting the family over decades; and the special love and support of Belinda Kimble. We thank you all so very much. His legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
