Obituary

After a lengthy struggle with heart disease, Jimmie F. Johnson, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on February 21. He leaves behind his wife Judy MyCue Johnson, a daughter Jennifer Johnson of Seguin and a son, Jeffrey and wife Daphne Johnson of Garland.  He was preceded in death by his parents Margie and Jimmie Johnson, mother and father-in-law, Arline and Roger MyCue, and a brother-in-law, Dickie MyCue.

As the only child of Margie and Jimmie, Jimbo, as he was called was born on January 4, 1938, in Denison, Texas.  During his childhood and youth, he enjoyed playing baseball and football.  When he was 10, the family moved to Eagle Pass where he graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1956.  A baseball scholarship from Texas Lutheran College brought him to Seguin where he played football and baseball. While at TLC, he met his future wife through a blind date arranged by Willie Spreen in 1957.  Jimmie and Judy married in November 1960. In the early part of 1960, Jimmie and a buddy, Perry Cox, joined the army and left for basic training at Ft. Ord in California. When he was discharged from the Army following the sudden death of his father, he returned to Texas and to Texas Lutheran.

After three years at TLC, Jimmie began working in San Antonio for the State Comptroller of Texas and was later transferred to Corpus Christi.  Four years later, he went to work for IBM and enjoyed twenty-five years with "Big Blue." After retirement and now living in Seguin, Jimmie went back to Texas Lutheran University where, much to his dismay, he was still on scholastic probation.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business in 1993.

After taking an officiating class at TLC in the late fifties, Jimmie spent many years as a football, baseball, and basketball official. He served two terms as president of Southwest Officials Association in the Corpus Christi area and continued his hobby in the San Antonio area after moving to Seguin in the late 1980's.

In addition to his many other activities, Jimmie was involved with the Texas National Guard for 29 years where he enjoyed many friendships. After retiring from the Guard, the close friends kept up with each other by yearly barbeque gatherings and telling true but often exaggerated stories about their years of service.

After retirement from IBM, Jimmie went to work for Seguin ISD with Even Start and later worked in the technology department.  He was a member of the Sunrise Lions Club, serving in many capacities.  A special thanks goes to Mel Grones who provided a ride to club meetings for the past three years. Jim also served on the First United Methodist Foundation and worked for a brief time as financial officer.

Other survivors include five grandchildren: Jaymes, Constance, Charlie, Cecilia and Jude. Three cousins, Douglas Foster, Kathy Lee, and Cindy Anderson survive him as well as brothers and sisters-in-law: Jerry and Carol MyCue, Scotty and Jacque MyCue, Merry Livingston, and Teri and John Nash and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the GRMC's Heritage Center for Seniors for their love and support. The family is grateful for GRMC's Hospice services for the compassionate, loving and professional care, and especially for the team of Melisha, Cindi, Diana, Sandra and Sonia.
