A Thousand Oaks, California resident for 45 years, John – known to his friends as Mac – died peacefully in his sleep on the evening of March 6, 2014. He was 90 years old. Mac was born in Framingham Massachusetts to John and Josephine (Valore) McKinnon. He lived a long and interesting life, with his wife Helen at his side for 61 years. They met and married in the Territory of Hawaii in 1952, when both were in the Navy – he a pilot, she a nurse. After leaving the Navy, Mac flew for United Airlines for 28 years, retiring in 1983. A quiet man, he was known for his interest in astronomy – especially the exploration of Mars, and was an avid lover of music and all things British. He also had a great love of travel, and provided the opportunity to share many new travel adventures with his family. Mac passed away in Seguin, Texas, where he and Helen had recently relocated. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, William "Bill" McKinnon. He is survived by Helen and his daughters, Leslie Patterson (Bryan), Valerie McKinnon, and grandchildren Andy Patterson (Kynley) and Erin Hart (Nathan); sisters-in-law, Joan McKinnon, Mary Oppenheim, Dottie Ann Teel and Peg Lutz; brother-in-law, Dick Teel; numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating Mac's life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the home of Bryan and Leslie Patterson. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to a charity of your choice. He will be greatly missed.
