Lt. Col. John Thompson, United States Army, age 78 of San Antonio, passed away on January 13, 2022. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin. Graveside service and interment with full military honors will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
John was born on October 18, 1943 in Clarksburg, West Virginia to James Elmer Thompson and Fanny Late Preston Thompson. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Paul Thompson, and Joan Turoczy. Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Rita Thompson, his sister Barbara Varner, his children Cindy Kalisky and husband Mark, DeLaine Wilson and husband Nathan, Raymond York, Renee York Taff and husband Chris, Caitlin Thompson and husband Roger, nine grandchildren including Tyler, Cassidy, Jacob, Cameron, Ben, Morgan, Cora, Carter, and Landon, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and friends.
John was raised in Bridgeport, West Virginia by his parents. Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and was trained as an infantry officer while also attending Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. While there, John earned his BA in Sociology. During his time in the military he collected many badges of honor including: The Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal, Senior Parachutist Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and many more. One of his greatest military accomplishments was serving as a Battalion Commander in the 82nd Airborne Division. After 25 years of service, John retired in 1986. Upon returning home, he worked in professional filing systems for PPS. During and after his lengthy military service he continued to enjoy spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
John truly enjoyed building things and woodworking. He also took great pride in taking care of his yard. John never met a stranger; he was the kind of person that would befriend anyone. He loved people most of all.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the veterans group: The Alamo Eagles Chapter 101st ABN DIV ASSN or any wounded veterans organization.
