Obituary

Joyce Ann Kunkel Watson, age 78, passed away on August 28, 2013, surrounded by her family and friends. Joyce was born August 26, 1935, in Seguin, Texas, to Frieda and Willie Kunkel. A true Texas girl, Joyce Ann Kunkel Watson, never met a stranger. From her hometown of Seguin to her long life in Austin, Joyce achieved great heights as a professional woman long before working moms were the norm. Joyce graduated from Seguin High School in 1953 where she was a majorette and where she made her lifelong group of friends, The Delicados, who would rent a van and travel the state attending rodeos and cheering on their favorite cowboys. The Delicados met as recently as last month, and although they did not go to the rodeo, they did gather at El Ranchito in Seguin, where they have been meeting and eating since their school days. Joyce's professional life took an amazing turn when, after working as the executive assistant to Harley Clark for 12 years, Joyce elected not to follow him when he was appointed a State District Judge. Instead, Joyce was selected as the Executive Director of a state agency, the Texas State Board of Irrigators, and she was among the first women to achieve such a status. Joyce had great pride in her work and long career, retiring from state service in 1994. Pam and Lisa were Joyce's pride and joy and their many friends became part of the family. Joyce, aka "Shakey" to those who knew her best, loved the beach and she loved to slather on the baby oil and fry, fry, fry (back in the day….). Friends all knew that Joyce's kitchen table was the Saturday Night Place to Be and Pam and Lisa's numerous high school friends thought of Joyce as a second mom. As a grandmother, Dowey loved to attend sporting events and birthday celebrations for Reed, Patton, Luke and Edee, and they made her as proud as a grandmom could be. One can't think of Joyce without remembering Cinco, the Shih Tzu, her loving companion of 15 years whom she fed like a person and who looked more like a pot bellied pig. Joyce is survived by daughters Pam Johnson-Lawson, Lisa Edmondson Lindner, Missy Watson Clark; grandsons Reed Johnson, Patton Lawson and Luke Lindner, granddaughter Edee Clark, and son-in-law, Marty Lindner. A celebration of Joyce's life will be held in a few weeks in Seguin. A date to be determined and more information will be provided soon. Memorial contributions may be made to Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation, 1215 E. Court, Seguin, Texas, 78155, or to the charity of one's choice.
