Katherine "Ann" Gary

Katherine “Ann” Gary, age 85 of Gonzales, formerly of Karnes City and Nixon, passed away on April 16, 2026. Ann was born on December 31, 1940, in Whitewright, Texas to Wilma (Janway) and Carlos Marlow.

Ann worked for the Nixon-Smiley Independent School District for many years as the Dietician in the School Cafeteria. Ann was a member of the Methodist Church in both Nixon and Karnes City.

Ann will be remembered for her love of cooking and entertaining. Whether it be an intimate dinner party or a party of two hundred, Ann was always ready to host in her home or any other home or venue. Decorating and preparing for Christmas was the highlight of Ann’s year. It usually included her making a variety of candies and cookies and over 150 fruitcakes, which were not your average fruit cake, as they were delicious and enjoyed by all! She won Grand Prize in a cooking contest in 1963 in Arkansas, with her award-winning Company Chicken recipe. This took her to Japan, China, and the Philippines, where she taught new techniques of preparing poultry. The best of times was always spent in the kitchen with family and friends watching and waiting for her delicacies to be served, with many requesting the chicken dish as well as many other favorites.

Always active in her communities, Ann was a board member of the Nixon Shakespear Club and was instrumental in the compilation of the Nixon Shakespear Club Cookbook which was published in 1970. The cookbook has gone through several publications with recipes having been shared, used and passed down from the original, for 56 years.

An avid bridge player, Ann always took her turn hosting bridge parties and attending large bridge tournaments. She traveled throughout the country playing in these tournaments and achieved the maximum number of points that classified her as Grand Life Master Bridge Player. She enjoyed travels throughout the United States and Europe. Her big smile, hearty laugh and the joy she exuded to all will never be forgotten.

Ann always had a piece or two of needlepoint going, as it was one of her favorite pastimes, and she spread her works of beauty to many friends and relatives.

Ann is preceded in death by her loving husband, William “Bill” Gary, grandsons, Baron Boone Davis, Trevor McGee Henderson, father, Carlos Marlow, stepfather, Bob Teel and mother, Wilma Teel, her sons-in-law, Robert Earl “Bobby” Harvey, III, Richard L Wagener, and her former husband and father of her children, John M. Henderson.
