Kenneth Glenn Richard, 72, born in Ames, Iowa on September 2, 1945 to Glenn and Doris Richard passed away peacefully August 26, 2018.
An accomplished athlete early on, Kenny went on to play on the varsity team for baseball, football, basketball and softball from Iowa City High School.
Continuing on with sports and education, Ken began his academic career at University of Iowa where he joined a fraternity. Always a patriot, he joined the Army National Guard of Iowa and Reserves of the Army in 1966. He transferred and graduated in 1970 from Upper Iowa University with BS degree in History and Education. During his time at Upper Iowa, he was an assistant football coach. On January 3, 1970, Ken married Barbara Ann Kent.
In 1971, Ken's fulfilling career in education began in Strawberry Point, Iowa at Starmont High School as the head football coach and P.E. teacher. His impact as a mentor made lifelong differences in the students he taught and strengthened the bonds of the friendships he made. He was passionate about what sports could teach you about courage, honesty, integrity, and living a happy and fulfilling life.
Ken never stopped being known as a coach, even though his career took him on another path to Waterloo, Iowa in the mid-80s where he had a successful career with New York Life. He would say that you could tell what sort of character someone had by the way they played golf. The rules of the game were his philosophy to live by in work and play. For him, the golf course was where he felt most at peace.
After many successful years with NYL, he was drawn back to his first passion sports, coaching football for Monmouth College. By the mid to late 90s, he moved back to the Iowa City area to Riverside, Iowa. He traveled all over the country playing golf, visiting family and spending winters in Texas or Arizona until early 2003 when Ken relocated permanently to Seguin, Texas to join Barb and stay close to his family.
Ken loved his family, had a deep faith with God, was passionate about sports, politics, and never met anyone who didn't become a friend.
Ken is survived by his wife Barb Richard, daughter Lisa Glidewell and her husband Joseph Dudley, daughter Michelle Richard and her husband Angel F. Rosa, daughter Laura McCollough; grandchildren Brandon Clark and Nathan Glidewell, Lauren, Miles and Avery McCollough; his brother Mike Richard, sister Deanne Jacobs, sister Susan Lloyd; brother-in-law Dale Lloyd, sister-in-law Susan Kent and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
