Kermit Harry Westerholm passed away May 13, 2014 in Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin, TX after a short illness at the age of 89. He was born October 20, 1924 in Danevang, TX. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Pfluger Westerholm, of 66 years, son, Mark and wife Sharon, daughter, Mary and husband Kerry Koehler, grandchildren: Kendell and Cameron (Christine) Koehler, Malorie and (Nic) Scaramozi, and Brandon (Jessica) Westerholm, great-grandchildren: Charlotte Koehler and Dax Scaramozi, sisters-in-law, Lucile Marburger, June Westerholm, and Jetta Westerholm and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, Astrid and Peter Westerholm- both born in Denmark – brothers: Herluf (Ruth), Max (Maidie), Leo, twin brother Harvey (Billie). Kermit attended grade school in Danevang, graduated from El Campo High School in 1942, entered A & I College in Kingsville that fall and completed 1 year. He enlisted in the armed Forces in November, 1942, was sent to the University of Missouri in May of 1943 to learn German and Russian languages, but 3 months later was sent to Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis and eventually ended up on Annette Island in Alaska. He returned home in the summer of 1946 and again enrolled at A & I where he majored in English/Journalism. He spent one year working for the Robstown Record before taking a job as a sports writer for the Austin American. In October, 1950, Kermit was recalled to active duty in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the USAF Reserve in 1966, after completing 25 years of military service. He returned to the Austin American and remained there until going to work in the Public Relations Department of Texas Lutheran College in August 1955, working in recruitment, fund-raising and serving as Sports Publicity Director. Through the years he enthusiastically recruited students and raised money for Texas Lutheran. He was a lifelong friend of countless alumni, often providing financial assistance and aiding students in finding employment. In 1985-86, he and his wife, Carolyn, were honorary coaches. He was inducted in the TLU Wall of Honor in 2003 and was also presented Texas Lutheran University's Distinguished Service Award in 2005. In addition, he was awarded the Faculty/Staff Philanthropic Appreciation Award in 2012. In 1965 he began Westerholm Insurance Agency and received the Frost National Bank Trophy for Outstanding Achievement in his first year of business by the San Antonio Life Underwriters. In 1990 he sold his business to his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Kerry Koehler. Kermit was a charter member of Faith Lutheran church where he was on the Church Council, served as Sunday School Superintendent and on various committees and was a delegate to numerous church conventions. An active member of Rotary, he has served as president of the local club and a host and guide for a Group Exchange to Germany. The Westerholm family hosted numerous exchange students and Kermit served as District Officer for incoming exchange students. He served on district and local scholarship committees for many years. He had 46 years of perfect attendance and was presented the Paul Harris Fellowship by the Seguin Rotary Club. Kermit served as president of the Seguin Chamber of Commerce and was honored with the Community Service Award in 1972 as well as the Agricultural Award in 1990. He was chairman of the United Fund, Cancer Crusade, and numerous other fund drives. In 1998 he received the Seguin Gazette-Enterprise Vision Award. For 30 years, Kermit was on the Texas Cradle Society board, an adoption agency, and served as president. He was a Cub Scout Master and active in many other youth activities, receiving the Mentor of the Year Award in 2001. He received the Guadalupe Masonic Lodge's Community Builder Award in 2007 in recognition of his contributions to the Seguin Community.. Active in farm organizations, Kermit served as chairman of the Youth Livestock Show for almost 20 years and was on the board of the Luling Farm Foundation. He received Distinguished Service Awards from both the Seguin and Navarro FFA chapters and has presented annual scholarships to both chapters. With a great love for sports, Kermit was business manager for the Seguin White Sox and SMI Steelers and President of the South Texas Baseball League and the South Texas Old-Timers Baseball Association. He also coached Little League teams, and was a former member of the board of the San Antonio Quarterback Club. He served on the TLU Development Board for many years and was on the A&I Ex-Student Board, serving as Fund-Raising Chairman. He also served as a member of the SISD School Board, and on the board for Seguin Manor Housing Authority. He enjoyed visiting in nursing homes and playing Santa Claus. Interested in preserving history, Kermit was instrumental in helping to establish the Danish Cultural Heritage Society of Texas in Danevang, TX and the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center in Seguin, TX, serving on their boards and assisting with fund raising. A memorial service celebrating Kermit's life will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Faith Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Paul M. Cross officiating. A reception will follow in the Life Enrichment Center at Faith Lutheran Church. Private interment will be held in the Faith Lutheran Columbarium at a later date.
