Kieth Wilbur Skogman, 87, passed peacefully from death to eternal life on February 12, 2014, at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, in Seguin, Texas. He was born on August 22, 1926, in Hopkins, Minnesota to John and Clara (Hanson) Skogman. Kieth grew up in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, graduated from St. Louis Park High School in 1944, and then attended Gustavus Adolphus College as part of a U.S. Navy training program. Kieth lettered four years in both football and hockey and two years in track. He played guard on the football team and is the only Gustavus graduate ('49) to be named All-Conference for four consecutive years. In 1981, he was inducted into the Gustavus Adolphus Hall of Fame for his contributions in Football, Hockey, and Track & Field. Kieth received his M.A. from the State University of Iowa. He taught physical education and coached football at Dana College (1950-54) and Nebraska Wesleyan (1954-60). After receiving his Ed.D. from The University of Nebraska, he returned to Dana College (1960-66) as Professor of physical education and Dean of students. In 2001, Kieth was inducted into the Dana College Athletic Hall of Fame. Kieth became employed by Texas Lutheran in 1966 and served the university as Professor of kinesiology, Athletics Director, and Coach for men's golf and men's/women's tennis. For 21 years, he guided the Bulldog men's and women's tennis teams. Kieth also willingly accepted other responsibilities related to promoting skill development, physical fitness, and health. Kieth was awarded professor emeritus status at TLU upon his retirement in 1994 and was inducted into the Texas Lutheran Athletics Leadership Wall of Honor in 2004. After his retirement from Texas Lutheran, Kieth coached golf at Briesemeister Middle School in Seguin for 10 years. As a long time Rotarian, Kieth received the Paul Harris Fellow award in April, 2004. Kieth was a member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church. He married Carol Louise Thomsen in 1952 in Denmark, Wisconsin. They were happily married for 61 years. Kieth enjoyed spending time with family, and his hobbies included playing bridge, golf, and tennis. Kieth had a zest for life, evident to all who knew him. He connected with others through his endearing sense of humor and his kind, accepting, and loving nature. Kieth was preceded in death by his parents, Clara and John Hanson, and brother, John and sister, Maxine, and daughter-in-law, Laura. He is survived by his wife Carol; his sons, Doug (Cindy), Darrel (Melissa), and Tom (Donna) Skogman; his sister, Hilma (Bill) Patterson of California, and Yvonne (Morris) Jenson of Minnesota; his grandchildren, Dustin (Kelley), Luke (Carolyn), April (Justin), Cale (Meredith), Stephen, and Dylan; and his great-grandchildren, Cowen, Samuel, Corbett, Hayden, and Joshua; and numerous relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of Abiding Presence at Texas Lutheran University at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 22, 2014 with Rev. Tim Bauerkemper officiating. A reception will follow on campus at the Student Activity Center at Jackson Park. Private interment will be held at later date.
