Obituary

Larry Joe Shahan, age 67 of Seguin, passed away on January 9, 2014. Visitation will be held on Sunday January 12, 2014 at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside services and interment will be held on Monday January 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Nockenut Cemetery with Rev. Tom Jones officiating. There will be an honorary service conducted by the Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
Larry started his journey in life on the 17th day of November 1946 in Ft. Worth, Texas as the first born son of Elvin Joe and Virginia Smith Shahan. In the summer of 1956, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Larry married Mary Joyce Spears on December 24, 1969 in Vashti, Texas. Larry enjoyed several past-times to include researching his family history, wild flower drives with his wife, and bird watching. He spent many hours volunteering for various clubs and organizations throughout his life. Larry pursued higher education thru the Texas Engineering and Extension studies at Texas A&M University, where in 1987 he obtained an "A" Water Treatment license, which is the highest level of certification in his profession. Additionally he held a "B" license certification to treat Waste Water in 1984. Larry retired after 26 years from Texas Parks and Wildlife where he was a Utility Plant Operator/Park Ranger at Lake Arrowhead State Park in North Texas. Upon moving to South Texas in 2002, he was employed by Guadalupe Blanco River Authority. He worked first at the membrane water plant located near Martindale and San Marcos where he was instrumental in helping Guadalupe Blanco River Authority move into this new technology. He then transferred to the Western Canyon Water Treatment Plant and the San Marcos Water Treatment Plant. He retired from Guadalupe Blanco River Authority after 9 years as a water treatment plant operator. He was a charter member in the Texas Water Utilities Association "A" Club in 2008, which was a significant highlight of his professional career. Preceding Larry in death were his father Elvin Joe Shahan in 1983 and his mother Virginia Smith Shahan in 2009. Larry is survived by his wife of 44 years Mary Shahan of Seguin, Texas, his daughters Tammy Wyatt-Johnson and her husband Don of Manassas, Virginia, Michelle Varnell and her husband Fred of Cleburne, Texas; 3 grandchildren Morgan Michelle Wyatt, Hudson Riley Wyatt, and Jethro Dane Varnell. He is also survived by his sister Judy Shahan of River Oaks, Texas and his brother Richard Shahan and his wife Bonita of McNeil, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Guadalupe Regional Wellness Center at 1339 E. Court St., Seguin, Texas 78155.
