Leonard S. Calkins, age 77 of New Braunfels, TX, formerly of Fort Collins, CO, passed away February 26, 2011. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel, 350 East Horsetooth Road, Fort Collins, CO. Interment will be in the Monte Vista, CO Cemetery at a later date. Court St., Seguin, TX 78155. Leonard was born on September 10, 1933, on the Trinchera Ranch near Fort Garland, CO, to Jack and Jessie (Lewis) Calkins both of whom preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1956 including a tour of duty in Germany. He was married November 16, 1957, to Lorene Hunt in Monte Vista, CO. Leonard was a man of high moral character who was known for his generosity and fairness. He was highly respected and admired by all who knew him. Leonard and his family were the owners of Alpine Homes in Fort Collins until retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Colorado Manufactured Housing Association, served as President and was on the State Dealer Licensing Board. Leonard was a talented horseman, competing in bronc riding, calf roping, and AQHA horse shows in his early years. He was an accomplished team roper who taught his sons and many other people how to rope. He lost and won with equal grace. Leonard was a member of the U.S. Team Roping Association and was a Gold Card Member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He was very active in his sons' rodeo activities and was the Adult President of the Colorado State High School Rodeo Association and managed the Colorado State High School Finals in 1978 and 1979. Leonard was a member of the Country Church in Marion, TX. Leonard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lorene Calkins; sons, Kenneth Calkins (Jan McMahon), Fort Collins, CO and Craig Calkins, Seguin, TX ; six grandchildren: Robert (Tammy), Harold (Jody), Ty (Mala), and Clay, all of Colorado; Jason (Shannon) and Jessie of Texas; seven great-grandchildren; cousins with whom he was raised, Joyce Fleming, Jim Washington and Jack Muller. Other survivors include Ruth Alexander; Lorene's sisters, Beverly Broyles, Sandra (Bill) Reed, Sharon (Alan) Jacobsen; and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
