Leroy Henry Wiese, 87, passed away June 28, 2017, at the family's vacation home at Lake McQueeney – a place he loved. "Wiese" as he was often called, was born October 4, 1929, to Henry and Elsie (Meier) Wiese, in Brenham.
A graduate of Giddings High School, he excelled in athletics there and spent his summers working for the Blue Bell Creamery, where both his parents worked. A football scholarship allowed him to attend college - first, at Schreiner Institute, where he was also Commandant of the ROTC Corps, and then at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, where he continued his education and football career.
His time at Texas A&I was interrupted by 4 years of proud service in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. When he returned to finish his studies, he met his wife of 41 years, Pat (Hall) Wiese. After 33 years as a Coach, Teacher, and Administrator, he and Pat retired to Port Lavaca to enjoy the coast.
Wiese moved to Seguin after Pat lost her battle with cancer and lived there for 15 years, before moving to San Antonio in 2013. In recent years, he spent time at Lake McQueeney whenever possible, and remained a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church. He also belonged to the local American Legion and VFW, and was a Life member of the Schreiner Alumni, the Texas A&I Javelina Club and the Retired Teachers Association.
While in Seguin, he met Irene King and they shared 5 years together, ballroom dancing and traveling before she, too, lost her cancer battle. In Seguin he also enjoyed his another passion – fishing, often with his good friend, Basil Karm.
Even more than football, fishing and Blue Bell ice cream, Wiese loved his family. He was a wonderful father, and "Big Daddy" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia Wiese; Irene King; son-in-law, Jerry Pennywell; and sister, Estelle Carmean. Survivors include his daughters, Karla Pennywell and Kris Petersen and husband, Bruce; his grandsons and their wives, Drew and Leslee Pennywell, Bryce and Caroline Petersen, Dane and Morgan Petersen; and his great-grandchildren, Wes Pennywell and Addie Grace Pennywell.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin. Burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 10:15 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Texas Children's Home (P.O. Box 759, Beeville, Texas 78104,) the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center Hospice, 1215 E. Court St., Seguin, Texas, 78155 or a charity of your choice.
