Obituary

Lester C. Nelson, age 87, of Seguin, passed away on August 30, 2011. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Emanuel's Lutheran Church with Willie Spreen officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held in the New Sweden Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Sweden, Texas at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Hahns Lillejord officiating. Lester was born on October 18, 1923 in Carlson, Texas to Lawrence and Pearl Olson Nelson. He was baptized in the New Sweden Lutheran Church in New Sweden, Texas. He attended Carlson Grade School and Elgin High School where he was on the football team and a member of the band. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he played the trumpet and was the band librarian for the Longhorn Band. He also attended Texas Lutheran College (Texas Lutheran University) where he also played the trumpet for the Texas Lutheran College Band. Lester worked at Duncan Field (Kelly Field) in San Antonio. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Lieutenant. He also served as a guard during the Nuremburg Trials and took Czechoslovakian prisoners from German Nazi Concentration Camps back to Czechoslovakia after World War II. He later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves. On June 14, 1947 he married Lois Moden. After the war, he worked at Randolph Air Force Base as Foreman of the Electric Shop for 30 years. Lester was a big supporter of the University of Texas where he was a "ticket taker" in Section 107 at Memorial Stadium for over 25 years. He was a member of Emanuel's Lutheran Church in Seguin. Lester was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Mid-Texas Symphony. He was also a member of the American Legion H. U. Wood Post #245 in Seguin. Lester enjoyed delivering meals for "Meals on Wheels". He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Lois and his parents. Survivors include his daughter, Carol Ann Nelson of Austin; son, Larry Nelson of Seguin; his pug, "Lucky"; extended family, LaNell, Amy, Jeffrey and Kendra Gibbs; Sara and Kit Chenault;Carolyn Sutton. Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Meachum, Dianne Willms, John Stokes, Frank Stokes, Jeffrey Gibbs and Kit Chenault. Honorary pallbearers will be Kermit Westerholm and G. P. Day. Lester will be remembered as outgoing and friendly. Always having a positive attitude, he considered himself "lucky" his whole life. His favorite parting phrase was "I'm glad you got to see me".
