Obituary

Lt. Col. Jimmie Porter (USAF Ret.) passed away on November 18, 2016 at the age of 81. A memorial service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Seguin, with Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville and Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Private interment was held earlier at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Jimmie was born on January 25, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas to Fred Franklin and Fannie (Morris) Porter. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952. He received his B.S. in Biology from Southwest Texas State University and later his PhD in Philosophy with a major in Biology from Pacific Western University. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. upon graduation from Southwest and assigned to Amarillo AFB as a B-52 crew member. Jimmie flew over 140 combat missions in Vietnam, and was awarded numerous decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with Ten Oak Leaf Clusters. Jimmie will be remembered by many as the owner and operator of ABC Pest Control in Seguin. During that time he had a weekly column in the Gazette and was a frequent guest on KWED. As a registered professional entomologist he was respected for his knowledge and experience. He applied those later as a consultant in the chemical division of FMC. Jimmie also served the community with many civic organizations. He was the first fire chief of the McQueeney Volunteer Fire Dept which he helped to organize, and a Past President of the McQueeney Lion's Club. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks Club, and DAV, and a Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy, a role in which he took great pride. Jimmie was an avid golfer who found the time to write a bit of his memoirs in "Two Old Geezer Golfers", published in 2010. Jimmie also loved hunting and fishing, but he seemed to have an even greater love for growing things. After retirement he and Gail bought property south of Seguin where his passion for farming resulted in growing enough produce to make him a regular at Seguin's Farmers' Market. Jimmie also raised a few cattle, which brought him true satisfaction. Upon being diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1996 he fought the progress of the disease with the same spirit that allowed him to overcome other challenges until 2014 when the symptoms worsened, slowly taking away his independence and health. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Eggleston Porter; his parents; brothers, William Morris Porter, Fred Nelvin Porter, Rayford Porter, Marion "Buddy" Porter; sisters, Gussie Franklin Carnes and Goldie Irene Stadler; stepson, Matthew Alan Brown. Jimmie is survived by his wife Dorothy Gail Fulbright Porter; son, Tracy Lee Porter and wife, Kelly, of Dallas; daughters, Terri Lynn Beck and husband, Vernon, of Deer Park, Trisha Leanna Rice and husband, Ken, of Austin; stepdaughter, Deborah "Debbie" Brown of Seguin; stepson, Eric Daniel Brown and wife, Kelly, of Paris, France; grandchildren, James Robert "JR" Beck and wife, Kerianna, Bryan Lee Porter and wife, Jennifer, Jennifer Renae Beck, Justin Wade Porter and Jackie Meschell; step-grandchildren, Cassandra "Cassie" Marie Brown, Ryan Daniel Brown and wife, Seagan; great-grandchildren, William James Beck; Carolyn McKenzie Beck; step-great-grandson, Jax Harper Best; numerous nieces and nephews. The family wants to express its appreciation to the dedicated caregivers at Remarkable Healthcare and GRMC Hospice. Serving as honorary pallbearers are J.R. Beck, Todd Brockwell, Rob Brockwell, Ryan Brown, Bryan Porter, Justin Porter and the members of Jimmie's Men's Bible Study Class. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 1314 East Cedar St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (michaeljfox.org) or to the charity of one's choice.
