Obituary

Margery Lee Fickbohm Squires, age 89 of Seguin, passed away on April 15, 2025.  Margery was born on April 22, 1935 in Lake City, Iowa.  She graduated from College of St. Benedict in St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1957 and married Don Squires on August 9, 1958.  She was a teacher for 2 years in South Dakota while Don completed Pharmacy school.  They soon moved to Hampton, IA where they owned Professional Arts Pharmacy for 15 years and Margery stayed busy raising their four children. Tired of the cold weather, the family relocated to Seguin, TX in 1979 where Margery taught High School Business and English classes for the next 21 years in Prairie Lea, TX.  Upon retirement, she began her traveling adventures with her dear friend, Cathy Brannies.  Together they went all over the world including Alaska, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Great Wall of China.  She also made several international journeys with her daughter, Lori and her family, as well as many memorable trips with her life-long friend, Alberta Lynn.

Margery was a voracious reader who must have read thousands of books in her lifetime.  She loved nothing more than a great novel, her recliner and a glass of chardonnay.  She valued education and encouraged each of her children and grandchildren to pursue a college degree.  Margery was a fierce competitor at any board game, card game or domino match and she especially enjoyed her card days with her girlfriends.

Margery's faith was a very important part of her life.  She was a devout member of St. James Catholic Church in Seguin and was a member of St. Ann's group, a faithful participant in the Adoration program, and enjoyed the many activities of the Single's group.  The family would also like to thank Steven Scheel and Annalisa Purcell who brought communion to her house each week for the last few years.

Margery is preceded in death by her husband, Don; parents, Phillip James and Isabel Fickbohm; infant daughter, Mary Jo; son Michael John; brother, Robert Fickbohm; and many close friends.

Survivors include her three daughters, Lori Birdsell (David), Linae Scheel (Brian) and Charlotte Dowell and grandchildren, Angie Birdsell (Miriam), Kelly Birdsell, Kyle Scheel (Casey Parker), Karlee Scheel (Tanner Kelsey), Walker Dowell (Meagan), William Dowell (Taylor), John Squires and Jenny Squires and great-grandchild Riley Dowell, sisters-in-law, Jo Ella Fickbohm and Betty Upton as well as nieces, Pam Meyer, Cynthia Lenz and Kristal Fickbohm Mosley, nephew, Randy Fickbohm and many friends.

The family would like to thank Margery's loving caregivers for the past three years.  We are forever grateful to Sylvia Alamaguer, Sylvia Arreola, Rachel Arreola, Mary Weems, and Ana Garcia.

Visitation will begin on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Canon Stanislaw Fiuk officiating.  Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.  A reception will follow and be announced.
