Growing up in Grimes County Mildred graduated from Navasota High School in 1942 and headed off to make her mark at Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas. While attending Sam Houston she was known as the blue eyed gal from Navasota with poise, charm, friendliness and a cooperative spirit. She majored in Home Economics and minored in Science and held many leadership roles in Kappa Delta Pi, Student Council, Pennybacker Club and The Loulie Sexton Estill Literary Society. After receiving her BS- Home Economics degree in May of 1945 she briefly taught Homemaking at Crosby Independent School District. Employment opportunities took her to College Station where Mildred worked in the Texas A&M Extension Services System as a county home demonstration agent in Fort Bend County. She later was promoted to an Assistant State Girls 4-H Club Leader on the A&M campus. During her nine years with the Extension Service she and four other Club Leaders created in 1954 the Texas 4-H Council which merged the boys and girls 4-H clubs into one 4-H Program. It is during this time that she met the love of her life, Garland A. Powers Jr. On July 16, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Navasota, Texas Mildred and Garland united in marriage. They began their life together on a ranch located on the Trinity River in Livingston, Texas with Mildred teaching school at Livingston High School and Garland as the ranch manager. In 1958, they put down roots on their new land near San Marcos. It is there Mildred became actively involved in the surrounding communities and began enjoying an active social life. Her greatest accomplishment arrived on April 19, 1960 when her pride and joy baby boy was born Garland A. Powers III, whom they decided to call GIII. As a family of three they worked hard together to develop their cattle ranch, organized and established Crystal Clear Water Supply Corporation in 1962, along with Mildred teaching Homemaking classes at the Seguin High School. She influenced and molded many young people in Guadalupe County for over 26 years teaching them cooking, sewing and life skills. In 1965 Mildred and Garland founded G.A. Powers Company a plumbing, pipe and water utility related supplies wholesale distributing business. Mildred also found time to enjoy the Beta Groups of Seguin, served on the Appraisal District Committees, organized and served for several Ballroom Dancing Clubs. She was an active member of Staples United Methodist Church in which she held many positions on the Church Council Board. Mildred took great pride in the eight Texas A&M University scholarships that she and Garland funded. She loved to share stories about A&M and it gave her great delight knowing their gift would continue to help generations of students with their education. One of Mildred's last achievements was the honor of a room named in her honor at the Texas 4-H Council Building located on the A&M Campus. She always cherished her memories at Texas A&M and she said "her life had truly been blessed because of all her experience's she had there."
