Oscar Edwin (Ed) LaMastus, 75, passed away in Seguin on June 4, 2010, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary with Rev. Tom Jones officiating on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Interment will be private. He was born June 2, 1935, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to parents F.H. and Manette LaMastus. He grew up in Texas, playing high school football and participating in 4H and Future Farmers of America. After graduation from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos with an Agricultural Science degree, Ed embarked on a long and successful career in sales, first in agriculture, then for the remainder of his working life in the oil and gas industry. He retired from NL Hycalog in 1990, and settled with his beloved wife Sue on a beautiful ranch with rolling hills and serene pastures in the northeast corner of Wilson County, Texas, where they raised cattle and hay, fished for bass and channel cat in their two stock tanks, and watched from the back porch of their house as the deer grazed in the meadow below. They passed many enjoyable years there, gardening, tending to "the Farm", and playing dominoes with their children and grandchildren on numerous visits. Ed had a sharp wit, a keen sense of humor, and a booming laugh. He was happiest when there had been plenty of rain to make the tanks brim-full and the grass green and tall so the cows would have plenty to eat. He was an avid reader and horticulturalist, and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of Texas history and animal husbandry. We will all miss him so very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife Sue; daughter, Denise Lervik and her husband Doug, of Sandy, UT; daughter Terrie Mancill and her husband Kirk, of Austin; son Michael LaMastus of McQueeny; and his four grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel Lervik, and Meredith and Samuel Mancill. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
