Phil attended school at St. James Catholic School until 8th grade. He then went to High School at St. Anthony Catholic School in San Antonio. Phil was a gifted athlete; he played football and was the State Champion Shot Put holder. Phil graduated in 1968 and attended Southwest Texas State University. Phil also proudly served his Country in the United States Air Force Reserves. Phil married Nancy Engelke in 1972 at Emanuel's Lutheran Church where they have been faithful members. All of Seguin knew Phil as a "Man of Steel", but many don't remember that Phil began his career at CMC Steel (formerly SMI) in a part-time position in 1970 while he was working on his B.A. in Marketing at SWT. Phil worked in every department and most of the jobs at CMC, and was promoted through the ranks. Over the 42 years at CMC, Phil held the positions of Assistant Works Manager of CMC Steel Alabama, General Manager of CMC Steel Arkansas, and finally, as Director of Mill Operations-Central Region for CMC Steel Texas. Being a local man, Phil always made sure to take care of his community; he was proud to call Seguin home, and he showed his pride by employing so many in the community. Phil also served on numerous boards in town and was chairman of Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation, Seguin Economic Development Corporation, and Central Texas Technology Center, and most recently as Seguin City Councilman, representing District 3. He was a past chairman of Magnolia, Arkansas Chamber of Commerce, Seguin Chamber of Commerce, a founding member of Seguin Manufacturers Round Table, a long-time member of Association of Iron and Steel Technology (AIST), and on the Board of Directors for First Commercial Bank. Phil was also involved in Relay for Life, Buck Fever, Dare, Disabled American Veterans, Guadalupe County Youth Livestock Show, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Heritage Museum, Freedom Fiesta, Salvation Army, Martin Luther King, Seguin Activity Center, Education Foundation, Youth Leadership Academy, Outdoor Learning Center, Conservation Society, Texas Theater, Youth Services, Seguin ISD, Teatros de Artes, Texas Agricultural Education & Heritage Center, TLU, and the Vietnam Memorial. Most recently Phil was awarded the 2017 Guadalupe Lodge #109 AF & AM Masonic Lodge Community Builders Award and the 2017 Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman's Award. Although Phil was extraordinarily busy with all of his commitments in Seguin, he always had time for his family, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed hunting with the Bee County Hunting Club, was an avid Spurs fan, and enjoyed many road trips to Lake Charles and Shreveport, Louisiana. Phil is preceded in death by his parents, his sister-in-law, Christine (Chris) Seidenberger, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Milton and Evelyn Engelke. Serving as pallbearers will be Miles Engelke, Barry Engelke, Ronnie Glenewinkel, Steve LaFerrara, Steve Koehler, Mark Long, Mayor Don Kiel, and Eddie McDonnell.
