Obituary

Ralph B. Shanafelt, age 90, went home to be with his Lord, Monday, November 18, 2013. Ralph was born August 14, 1923, in Stamford, Texas to Ralph Otto Shanafelt and Bessie Hackney. He was working at the naval air station in Corpus Christi during WWII when he met the love of his life, Adele Jackson. They were married October 24, 1942, in Kingsville, Texas and celebrated their 71st anniversary this year. He came to Seguin in 1947 and founded his business, Shanafelt Auto Company. The company celebrated 66 years of business in September, boasting three generations of Shanafelts. Many people at home and around the world have been influenced by Ralph's faithful service to others in his mission work. In 1979, he took his first mission trip to Brazil and continued volunteer mission work until 1995. He was an active member of the Texas Baptist Men, Baptist Men Retiree Builders, and Baptist Men Mobile Disaster Relief Unit. He was on the board of directors at Highland Lakes Baptist Encampment, San Marcos Baptist and Bluebonnet Baptist Associations, and was a member of Texas Baptist Men Executive Committee. Ralph was Missions Coordinator for the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association, coordinating mission work along the Texas/Mexico border and in Mexico. Ralph was a Christian and member of First Baptist Church, Seguin, where he served as a deacon for 66 years. Ralph was a member of Guadalupe Lodge #109 AF&AM Masonic Lodge for 66 years and The Grand Commandery Knight Templar of Texas, San Marcos Commandery #56 and Seguin Chapter #344, R.A.M. for 42 years. He was a Guadalupe County election official and charter member of the Seguin Education Foundation. He enjoyed many days at the family beach house in Port Aransas and was a stained glass artist. His family will miss him and will remember Papa as a godly, upright and faithful Christian man. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Allene (Chuck) Parker and granddaughter, Catherine Jean Shanafelt. He is survived by his wife, Adele; brother, Frank (Blanche) Shanafelt; and children: Kathleen (Robert) Martin of Edna; Jack (Penny) Shanafelt; Fred (Joanne) Shanafelt; Marianne (Howard) Hudiburg; and Stacy (Bobby Greg) Johnson, all of Seguin; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville, Rev. Jeremy Roy, Rev. Jerry Johnson and Rev. Frank Cornelius officiating. Graveside services and interment under the auspices of Guadalupe Masonic Lodge #109 AF & AM will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery. Pallbearers are grandsons Andrew Shanafelt, RJ Shanafelt, Robert Clay Martin, and Sam Shanafelt; Billy Knott, Session Howell, Nathan Beabout, and Ryan Drake.
