Obituary

Roger Scott Meckel, age 57, of McQueeney, lost his valiant battle with cancer on April 10, 2008. What a fight he waged, and we all admire him for it! A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at Cross United Church of Christ with Rev. Jim Price officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Scott was born on February 26, 1951 in Seguin, Texas to Roger Lee and La Nell Koepsel Meckel of McQueeney, Texas. He was their firstborn and shared his childhood with a sister, Rita Meckel Zwicke. Scott was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict serving in the Army as a communications specialist. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked as a surveyor with H. S. Bettersworth, General Distributing of Seguin, and finally, the United States Post Office where he served as a mail carrier for many years. He retired in 2006. On July 9, 1977, he married Becky Borchers of Marion, Texas, and through this union was blessed with a son, Wyatt Meckel, of whom he was very proud. The family grew to include a sweet daughter-in-law, Bianca, and a beautiful granddaughter, Kirsten. Scott enjoyed competition through active participation in high school sports, men's softball, volleyball, and basketball leagues, as well as a challenging game of cards or dominoes. He was an avid hunter and sometimes guide. He loved the camp life, good eats, stories, and camaraderie with his hunting buddies. Scott will be remembered for his quick humor, straightforward attitude, and honesty. His father, Roger Lee Meckel precedes him in death as does his father-in-law, Marvin Borchers. He leaves behind his loving wife of 30 years, Becky; his son, Wyatt Meckel and his wife, Bianca; granddaughter, Kirsten; mother, La Nell Meckel; sister, Rita Zwicke and husband Doug; mother-in-law, Marion Borchers; sister-in-law, Maureen Hickson and husband Ormond; nephews, Craig Zwicke, Mark Tschoepe and wife Colene, Paul Tschoepe and wife Stephanie, and Clint Tschoepe and wife Becky; plus a host of family and friends.
