Roy Romine Powell made his final ride on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the age of 95 years and 7 months. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, of 52 years, and his son Conrad (Corky). Roy was born to Alonso Stanton and Winnie Lee Powell on July 13, 1917, in Haleyville, OK. The Powell's moved to Rio Hondo, Tx., in his early years, which saw him through the fourth grade, when he left school to help on the farm after the death of his father. He was an accomplished horseman and horse trader, owning three horses at the age of ten. Roy began developing his considerable talent for operating and maintaining farm equipment, cars, buses and trucks and he continued to work in the transportation industry. During his 95 years, Roy was a horseman, a farmer, a bus driver, a top notch diesel engine mechanic for bus lines and trucking companies. He first owned an automobile and then a truck repair business, and eventually owned the central Texas distributorship and repair center for two major truck manufacturers. Roy was always fond of music and loved to sing. He had a band at the age of 14 that played for dances at farms, ranches and rodeos around Rio Hondo. Even at the age of 95, he would sing, in perfect tune, for anyone who cared to listen. A Christian and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Texas for over 60 years, he was a man of uncommon goodwill and good nature. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his younger sister, Margaret Duval of Tulsa, Ok; three granddaughters, Kimberly Westbrook, Tamara Powell and Terri Kubina, and 22 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Tres Hewell Mortuary on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Knolle Chapel at First United Methodist Church in Seguin at 10 a.m. with Rev. Clint Harris officiating and the auspices of the Masonic Lodge. Private interment will be held later in Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
