Rudolph Benjamin Spacek, Jr., a former teacher and long time grocer in Seguin, died on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the age of 93. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Saturday, February 5 at 11 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin. Born in Fayetteville, Texas on June 8, 1917 to Rudolph B. Spacek, Sr., a five-term State Representative, and Minna Forres Spacek, he was the youngest of five children. He came to San Marcos, Texas to attend Southwest Texas Teachers College, where he earned a degree in mathematics and business administration in 1939. He was the head lifeguard at Sewell Park on the San Marcos River while he was at college. He taught school in Sealy and Marion and served as superintendent of schools in Marion. He met his wife, Ruth Agnes Campbell at Williams Drug Store in Seguin and after a whirlwind romance; they married on June 25, 1942. He left 10 days later to go to Trinidad BWI, where he served in a civilian capacity in communications during World War II. Following the war, he taught at Seguin High School and helped veterans attain their GEDs during evening classes. They had two children, Linda Spacek and Mark Spacek. He opened College View IGA Grocery Store in the early 1950s and operated it for 30 years in Seguin. Following his retirement from the grocery business, he worked in real estate for several years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 60 years and St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Seguin. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Seguin, daughter Linda Spacek of San Marcos, son Mark Spacek and wife Kathy of Centennial, Colorado, granddaughters Naomi Young and husband Turtle of Buda, and Sara Spacek of Centennial, and grandsons David Spacek and Matthew Spacek of Centennial.
